I would appreciate help with this one. For the last 4 years, starting with DVD X-COPY I have made copies of my DVD's. I use Sony DVD-R media, Maxell, Memorex media. The burns seem to work fine. But playing these copies in "off the shelf" DVD players has always been a problem. The discs will play fine for a while, and then start with digital noise blocks, eventually even just failing to play. I found that the Panasonic DVD/VCR player at CostCo is most tolerant about this and seem to play almost anything I give to it. But I have found along the way that in Toshiba players, Sony, etc. these copied DVD-R's just seem to not play well. This is quite a bit different than copying a music CD-R. I also don't seem to find the problem as often with DVD-R's I burn from my video's rather than copying DVD's I've purchased. Is playing DVD copies just a hit and miss proposition?

The DVD-RW drive that burned those backups, should play them and they should look near original for quality.

When it comes to playing dvd backups, those stand alones can be pretty screwy.

Lots of things can affect playback:
Burn speed
Media quality-get the high quality stuff like ty/verbatim/ritek
Multi-tasking
Paper-sticker type labels
fragmented Hard drive
Spyware/malware
Burn program
Format
heat
20 million other things

If the issues are always on the end of your backups, reduce the backup target size to 4300 mbs.

I don't know squat about x-copy.There's a few free programs you can try: DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter.

What's the model# and brand name of your DVD-RW drive?

HP a1118x-b/athlon 64-3300+/BenQ 1650 BCDC/LG 8163B/Modded Wii/Epson-R300 and Ty Watershields!!!

I burn to a TDK DVDRW0404N firmware version 1.0C.

I've had the same problem with my Plextor PX-08UF firmware 1.11

As far as I know, these are both the most current firmware. I only burn to 4x media at this point so I'm not even using the full speed of the Plextor.

I don't know how to let you all know about dye lot codes. I use TDK DVD-R from CostCo and Sony DVD-R with the same result.

The burning seems to work great. It's playing back where the home DVD players seem to have significant problems.

You can download DVD identifier from here:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/index2.cfm

This will give you the media codes for your discs.

Rotary,

RE: try backing the size off abit to 4300 so as not to burn to end of discs?

I'm a newbie and I honestly don't know what this means or how to do it. If you don't mind, can you give me a bit of direction.

Also, lately I've been using 1Click DVD Copy 4.2 for all burning (and AnyDVD in the background to handle the copy protection.) Still find reading in home stand-alone players somewhat unreliable.

The Sony TY media is excellent stuff. Some stand alone players are finikey about the media that they want to play. If you want to produce backups that will play in about everything you should use DVD+R media and booktype it to DVD-ROM which is how commercial DVD's are made. These will play in about anything.

Here is some information about Booktypeing.

http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46559

If your burner can bitset, then it is the way to go.

The Target size can be set in DVDShrink under Edit>Preferences>and on the preference tab click the down arrow and select Custom and then type in 4300 in the text box.

Once you make this change you won't have to do it again.

I've had an identical problem. It turned out to be stick-on labels. The labels can, over time, warp the disk and cause the disk to stick or pixilate.

I've removed paper labels on dozens of disks that "went bad" on me that played fine after I burned the movies. After removal all of them worked.

I gave this advice to my son -- it worked also without fail.

Scarlet,

What type/brand of labels were you using? How much time did you find elapsed before you noticed the labels causing problems with the DVDs? Immediately? After months? Years?

Thanks!

I've used various brands of labels. Stomper is a brand that I remember. I think another brand was Avery. All of the labels caused problems.

It is now well documented that labels cause problems. My new DVD recorder came with a warning not to attach labels because it can cause warping.

It seemed that newly attached labels usually didn't cause problems. After a few weeks to a few months, most labels caused problems.

I had to remove a lot of labels.

I used this technique.
1. Soak the DVD's in warm water for a couple hours (I've even left them soaking for a day.
2. Take finger nail and gouge out a piece of label (about 1/8") from the center to the edge of the DVD.
3. Scrape the DVD something plastic that has a hard straight edge. The best thing I used was 3" drafting triangle.
4. Use Goo Gone to remove the remaining glue. Some disks leave very little glue -- some leave a lot.
5. You will end up with a little glue on the playing side of the disk from handling it. Use Goo Gone there too. I use old T-shirts to wipe the disks.

Good luck.
