pardon the question if it sounds like a bit of a novice one, but i've just started looking into ripping dvds, and everywhere i look seems to offer suggestions for how to rip a dvd to divx or vcd or svcd, but i can't find any methods for ripping one to uncompressed avi form.
i've tried using dvdx and dvd2avi, which seem to offer this option, but neither work. (reinstall as i might, dvdx always cuts off at 3.99gb.)
Virtualdub can do so (direct stream copy) Only Windoze filesystem supporting files larger than 4 GB is NTFS. (may also be an issue in general with AVI files, can't remember, 'cause I always compress:-)
i've given virtualdub a try, but it can't read
the ripped vob or ifo files. do i need to
perform some sort of other conversion in
between? (i've set it to direct stream dub as
you suggested.)
as for the 4gb limit, xp seems to be okay with
bigger files, but cuts off at 4gb for avi files
when i have a version of pinnacle studio
installed (no matter what software i'm using for
the avi itself). trouble is, i've uninstalled
studio but the limit is still there this time...
if it's set some limit in windows itself, is
there a way to reset it?
First of all, uncompressed AVI will be around 30 - 90GB of size, I truly hope you have one partition with this much space free?-)
If you still insist that for some weird reason you need to do this (have fun), decrypt the VOBs to your HDD using SmartRipper or similiar and then use AVI.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">DVD2AVI to save it as an AVI.

actually, yes. the main reason i want to do this
is so that i can edit uncompressed avi down to
the bits i want to take from the dvds, and then
encode as svcd later on.

i've already tried exactly this, as i suggested
in my initial post (all i didn't say was which
ripper i'm using).
when i use dvd2avi, i manage to create the d2v
file successfully, but when saving as avi, it
creates a 0bytes avi file and instantly says
"finished" -- which is the bit that's puzzling
me. :)
Odd. I have done this using a Canopus DV codec using DVD2AVI 1.76 without the problem you're seeing. Does it create a 0 byte file and finish regardless of the AVI codec type?
since i'm running with uncompressed avi,
obviously i don't select any particular codec.
but basically, yes, it says straight away that
the avi creation is finished, and i get a 0b file.
the only codec that appears to be installed in
dvd2avi is the divx 5.0 codec, and if i run
that, the whole app crashes.
