Networking two Slimline PS2's together?

Would greatly apprechiate any help on this topic.
I have 2 slimline ps2's, 1 netgear router and 2 RJ-45 network cables (+ a copy of the DNA Network Access disc at my disposal.)

Me and a mate want to race eachother in various ps2 games using the Networking LAN feature. I have no Broadband connection to hook the ps2's through. What do I need to do to make it work? The UNique Network Access code in in the manual is only used for Online games, correct?

Hook both the ps2's to the Router/hub.. and will the router be able to detect both of the ps2's hooked up. Do I have to mess around with IP settings and subnet masks? or will the PS2 automatically issue them to eachother?

Trying to play GT4. Am I overlooking anything?
