Well ya cant just split a dvd onto 2 blank cds im afriad, you'll have to convert it to vcd/svcd first

OK you said you have a dvd that you want to split to make a vcd.
Well to do that you would have to
1. Rip the DVD
2. Encode it to VCD (will give you a .mpg file)
3. split the .mpg file
4. burn it to 2 cd's (usually)
Are you only beginning with all this?

Hello Della,
I am also new and believe I have same type question. I want to burn a cd that can be read on my DVD/VCR player. Booklet for DVD say it can read formats (DVD , DTS, VCD/SVCD). When I ripped a movie to put on my pocket pc, I didn't have any problems and even created 2 CD's in mpeg-1 format that read on my desktop pc DVD, but didn't read on my DVD/VCR player.
What do I have to run or select to get it in one of the readable formats ?

don't split the file, encode it as 2 files.. go to http://entiendo.gotnet.net and it will show you how to take a dvd movie and split the output to fit on 2 cds using tmpgenc.

depfer, Did you create standard compilant VCD?? Also, its Dela not Della, my name is james, dela comes from my last name! lol assure you i am male, only 16 but still male :-)
Jodie_16, On a dvd are a series of vob files. these never go over 1 gig and basically they are the movie files on the dvd. They have a protection called CSS. They are MPEG-2 files and have massive birate rates (usually around 8000kb/s so you can imagine the quality of 8mb per second. The movie runs 29.97fps(frames per second) if its NTSC (NTSC=North America + Japan), or runs 25fps if its PAL (PAL=Europe + Austrailia). frames are basically pictures but not exactly, lol. When you ruip a dvd, the ripper you used (eg smartripper) will have used a program called DeCSS to bypass the CSS protection and you will have the vobs without CSS on your hard drive. You then have to use an encoder or frameserver to change the movie to mpeg-1 with a low birate (1150kb/s), qhich isn't really that hard. the link i provided you wil show you everything from ripping the dvd to frameserving it to TMPGEnc and splitting it with TMPGEnc. It sounds complicated but it isnt although i admit you may run into some problems with TMPGEnc but i'd be more than happy to help!

Dela,
Sorry, I didn't mean to change your name..
Exactly how do I ensure I creat the "Standard Compliant VCD" ?
I used Smartripper, DVD2AVI, and TMPGEnc to get my final movie. Do I select it as a parameter in one of these programs, or do I need to run a different program ?
By the way, I'm only 45 years older than you, so take pity and help the old guy! I'm not new to computers (I repaired supercomputers), but I always shunned software whenever possible.
Thanks, Jim

Dela,
Since you indicated I used the correct programs get a compliant VCD, does that mean that VCD is the same as MPEG ? My output is mpeg1. Is it possible that my DVD player requires mpeg2 rather than mpeg1 ? Could that be the reason my mpeg1 works fine on my pocket pc and desktop pc DVD player but not my DVD/VCR player I have connected to my TV ?

Well it depends on what your dvd player plays yeh. If it says VCD or Video CD then it would play an mpeg-1 vcd file!

Dela,
I should have repeated what was stated earlier in the thread. My DVD/VHS player lists playable formats as DVD, DTS, VCD/SVCD, and
a few others. If it should play MPEG1 if it lists VCD as a valid format as you indicated, I thought maybe it needed mpeg2 since mpeg1 didn't work. Can you think of any reason why I might be having problems on this DVD/VHS player when it works ok when I try my DVD player on my desktop pc.

Nope, the only problem i would have thought of would have been that the mpeg-1 wasnt standard vcd compilant! did you use the guide on this site to rip it?

Dela,
Yes, I did use the guide listed on this site. The only thing I didn't do was use a program like Nero to burn the CD. On Windows XP, I opened the window for my CD-RW Drive, and did a click and drag of my mpeg1 file to the CD-RD Drive window. A CD writing wizard popped up (Direct CD 5.0) to create the CD. If I put the CD in my DVD drive on my computer, it reads ok using Windows Media Player.
Do you think this might be the problem. I could buy a copy of Ahead Nero 5.5 at Bestbuy for $69.99. What about Roxio Easy CD Creator 6.
The comparison chart seems to indicate it has a lot more options. Of course that was Roxio's chart.

depfer, no you dont do that you need to use Nero or VCDEasy or something. All you burned was a data cd, you didnt burn a vcd compilation at all! Get nero from http://www.nero.com
When you open it, it will give an option to create a dvd or cd so create a new cd and click next, then select other formats and next click next, then select VideoCD and click OK!
The file browser is on the right and the compilation window is on the left, all you have to do is drag the vcd file from the file browser to the compilation window. Then click file - write cd!

Dela,
Thanks for all your help...I downloaded Nero and after a few burns, I got the recommended settings to produce some very good CD's. All is working fine now. I have only used the recommended settings listed on Ahead's FAQ pages, which listed using 352X240, and the movies I tried were 19:6 NTSC. They didn't mention what to use if the original movie is 4:3 NTSC. Do you happen to know what setting would be for the 4:3 NTSC ?
Once again thanks,
Jim

The aspect ratio and the picture size are different so 352x240 it would be!
