Hi,
I am using a Ricoh DVD writer (Model: MP5240) and have the following problem:
I have been using this writer with no problems with lots of differents medias, but now suddenly I can't write on new EMTEC DVD+R I just bought a week ago. Therefore, I decided to buy another brand, thinking these EMTEC media are bad and went for PHILIPS DVD+R. Results: still not working. I am pretty sure these medias are ok unless a very weird coincidence, but I really doubt this is the case..
I do know my writer can only write up to 4x, but both discs here are labelled 8x certified as every new ones does now. Also, these are well known manufacturers on the market, so I am thinking more to a driver incompatibility, rather than HW or SW issue since I can still burn without problem on my current, but few remaining 4x speed DVD+ (Commodore, Sentinel, Sony) and on CD-R/RW
I updated to the latest driver (V1.19) from Ricoh website; no way either. Message says illegal disc for each copy I am trying, this using different burning softwares, as the ones delivered with my driver InterVideo (DVD Copy & Master) as with Nero 6.
Can someone help me.
Thanks
Yves

let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.
You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

I'm sure Creaky will be along and check out your Nero log. Hopefully the answer lies there. But both Emtec and Philips are suspect at best for media.

- Nero's too old, latest 6.x version is 6.6.0.18, download "update package 1" from here - http://ww2.nero.com/enu/nero-up.php

- firmware's up to date, albeit dated Feb 2004!! so the firmware is way out of date to cope with newer media.. - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1637

- as i say, your firmware is lacking. this is similar to what you should see - Quote: Recorder: HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer: TYG02 -
Disc Application Code: 64, Disc Physical Code: 193
- ie a 3line paragraph when the firmware's up to date. The firmware has been neglected by Ricoh since Feb 2004, so i can't see a way forward other than to buy a new drive.... your firmware is integral to burning, if it's firmware can't recognise newer media you're gonna have to search high and low for 'older' media that the firmware is able to handle, but it's gonna be easier to spend a few quid/dollars and buy a new drive...

I'll better choose to buy a new writer then, and sorry to say, not a Ricoh anymore (this lack of firmware update is the main reason, of course.) It's a pitty for such good piece of hardware which worked fine during the last 2 years for me and still does).
Thanks a lot for this analyze; I really appreciate your help and quick reaction.

Hi all,
Just received answer from Ricoh concerning this problem. It confirm your log analyse, see below.
...
Thank you for your log file.
It does report incompatible media. Please use discs of up to 4 x (DVD+R and DVD +RW) . We suggest the following brands:
CD-R (74min./80min.): RICOH, Mitsubishi, Verbatim, TDK, Maxell, Taiyo Yuden, Mitsui
CD-RW (74min./80min.): RICOH, Mitsubishi,
DVD+R: Ricoh,Ritek,MMCC, Verbatim,Philips,Sony
DVD+RW: Ricoh,Ritek,MMCC, Verbatim,Philips,Sony
If you cannot find this media in the local market, you could purchase it from www.eshop.ricohpmmc.com

yup, that's the crux of it, but it's getting harder to find 4x media..you'll be ok as long as you can find it, but now 16x media is becoming more common, there's gonna be even less 4x out there..

Before you buy a new recorder, I have a Sony DVD burner and Nero software. I could not use the DVD+R only DVD-R will burn and play everywhere. Just a thought.... The DVD+R would play in my portable DVD player but would never play on any home DVD player until I started using the DVD-R. A friend told me this as she had the same problem.

@taralynn - the problem is that Zayan can only use discs that are catered for by the drive, and 4x discs are not gonna be around forever; provided 4x discs are found then the burner can still be useful..
