I have been burning some movies that have worked fine when I play them but recently a few of my movies have been freezing up during play. I use DVDFab/AnyDVD/DVDShrink/Nero to copy the movie. The latest one was Exorcism of Emily Rose. About 80 minutes into the movie everything kept freezing. I had to jump to a new chapter to see the rest of the movie. I only do the re-author in Shrink and I remove everything possible. Is there any other trick to getting a perfect movie? I use Sony media and I have a new DVD player (as my old one always had issues playing burned DVDs). Should I try to copy the movies at 2x instead of 4x.

What's the brand name and model# of your DVD-RW drive?

What's the speed rate and format of those sony discs? An MID code will help-or look on label for country they were manufacturered.Neroinfotool should tell you that code.Example: SonyD11/Sony08D1/Yuden000-T02/Sony04D1

Here's my formula to near perfect backups, see if anything you may have missed:

Quality media
4x burn speed on +8x media/8x burn on +16x media
Keep HD defragged
Main Movie only/eliminate credits and extra sound streams, etc
Backup target of 4360 mbs in DVD Shrink-keep burn away from edge
No paper/sticker type labels. They will definitely have more issues.
A clean/good condition Original disc to rip.

You've eliminated the compression factor. That movie is well over 80 mins,so it's not on the end of the backup. See if any of those items I listed affect you.

There's a whole lot of other things too. Most likely scenario:

Maybe a bad batch of media. Sony is excellent in the 8x speed, horrible in the 4x speed for me.Try further down in that spindle. It's always good to have a couple different brands of media for when issues arrise. They are made in Japan and taiwan,so quality may vary.I go for the japanese ones, lots of taiyo yuden in them!

Maybe a bad rip. Delete those files and start over again.

Your stand alone may be sensitive to 4x speed, try 2x. Maybe even try 8x. Some of this quality media/and quality drives cause issues at the slower speed burns.

Use Nero speedtest to run a scan on that backup to check for errors.

My drive is an Iomega DVDRW16XUSB. I did load the latest firmware on the drive. I will try to burn at different speeds to see if this works any better.

Hey jhbaum00,
I was having the same promlems when I first started backing up my DVDs. No matter what media I used, what my write speed was, The problem wouldn't go away. This is what you do to fix it:

First, check the DVD player's manual to see what media type it supports for proper playback and use only that media type to put your backups on. If the player does not support playback for DVD+/-Rs or +/-RWs then I suggest upgrading to a newer one with multi-media playback support.

Second, if you don't want to spring for a new player you can try booktyping the DVD to a DVD-ROM. Booktyping can only be applied to DVD+R media and only if your recorder supports it. By booktyping the DVD to a DVD-ROM, the player will identify/recognize the disk as a DVD-ROM. Since all players are compatiable with DVD-ROM playback, you problem should be solved. If your recorder supports booktyping you should be able to do this using Nero. Run Nero Burning Rom and press cancel on the window with all the tabs that's displayed, now at the top click RECORDER-->CHOOSE RECORDER, click the options button, on the lower left you should see a booktype setting(possibly set to automatic). At the top highlight your recorder and then set the booktype to DVD-ROM and press ok (if your recorder does not support this then nero will let you know), once done all DVD+R media will be booktyped as DVD-ROM. Use good quality media and stick to a write seeed of 4X.

Here's a link on booktyping:

I'm not sure that drive has the bitsetting capability to booktype.Unless it's a rebadged litey-that k-probe utility probably won't work.

Booktyping only helps when you have stand alones that give a no disc error when inserted. If you get that error on the dash/plus/or both-that booktyping the plus format to dvd-rom will have a better chance to be recognized. It shouldn't affect playback issues like jhbaum00 is having.

jhbaum00: Do you have the MID code for those sony's?

I'm not much help when it comes to USB drives.

Try to reduce backup target in DVD Shrink. Burn at 2x and see how it looks. Here's how you set up that new backup target:

Open shrink
Edit
Preferences
Click on dvd-5
Scroll until custom
Enter 4300 mbs
OK

That's your new backup target and it'll stay that way till you change it again. There's a little more compression, but maybe it'll help-can't hurt. I always keep mine at 4360 mbs. 4380 mbs is all a blank dvd can hold.

Do you have any other brands of blanks you can try? Maybe even an RW?

I found a site in this forum with the firmware. You can try here
http://www.firmware.fr.st/

I also bought a new DVD-Burner (BenQ) and all of my problems have been solved. I reboot my PC after every 3-4 burns and my problems have been resolved.
