I am using Windows XP Pro SP2, DVDShrink 3.1.6, Nero Burning ROM 6.6.0.13, Lite-On DVDRW SOHW-1633S Drive to burn everything I backup. I went to burn Madagascar, but it won't let me.After I uncheck some items to get it to fit onto one disc(AC3 5.1Ch French),I push the "Backup!" button, setup the disc and push "Ok" to start burning. It says "DVD Shrink has encountered an error and cannot continue. Failed to read file "D:\". Copy Protection Error - The read failed because the sector is encrypted." What do I have to do to be able to burn this DVD? I have only had this problem with one other movie, "Bad Boys", but didn't really care to backup it since the kids don't watch it. If anybody can help it would be great. Thanks, George

Another way around the encryption on that movie is a background ripper called AnyDVD by slysoft. It'll help DVD Shrink rip those newer releases. No extra steps. Once you activate it,you'll see the little red fox icon in your utility tray. Then proceed with your normal process!

You can get the free trial here:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/anyd...

With DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter no longer updated, this program helps them out.

You'll get this error message: Failed to read file "c:\". Copy Protection Error - The read failed because the sector is encrypted.", when you start dvdshrink before you insert the dvd you're trying to backup. To make sure this does not happen, you should always play the dvd for a couple of seconds, stop playback then open dvdshrink to open disk.

I backed up Madagascar using dvddecrypter then VobBlanker then used dvdshrink.

Used dvddecrypter in file mode to rip the files to my HDD, tried to open the files with dvdshrink but had a problem with file VTS_08.VOB and could not continue. I then used VobBlanker to remove the problem cells in file VTS_08.VOB (kept entry 01, blanked entries 02-05), once VobBlanker was done processing the files, I then opened the new files with dvdshrink and made my backup.

I downloaded AnyDVD from the link, installed it and it almost burned it. It did the analysis, and it got all the to 6 minutes left to Encode and a message popped up saying the virtual memory in my pc is too low. I turned off the pc, waited a minute, turned it back on, tried it again and it did the same thing. I have AMD64 3000+ with 1024MB RAM, and a GeForce FX5200 128MB video card. Now what do I do?

Disable all background apps. Antivirus/internet/screen saver/and anything that will use your resources when you backup dvds.

Dvd shrink will max out your processor,so every little thing you shut down will help.

First get VobBlanker (free) at:
http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm

Follow along and succeed in 5 easy steps:

1) Use dvddecrypter in file mode to rip the dvd files (whole movie)to your hard drive, once complete you should have all the files stored in a VIDEO_TS folder. Close DVDdecrypter.

2) Create a new folder on your desktop and name it "RIPPED", this folder will contain the processed files by VobBlanker.

3) Run VobBlanker. For input folder selection, browse to the VIDEO_TS folder containing the files ripped by DVDdecrypter, in the folder highlight the VIDEO_TS.IFO file and press ok. For output folder selection, browse to the "RIPPED" folder you created and press ok.

4) This is the important part...In the Title Set section (upper portion) of VobBlanker find and highlight the VTS_08*.VOB file, this will cause all the associated PGCs in the selected title set to be displayed (lower section). Under PGC# you should see entry 01 thru 05, entry 01 is the valid entry, the others are the ones causing the problem and need to be blanked. Highlight entry 02 and then press the blank button on the right, do the same for entry 03, 04, and 05. Now all you have to do is press PROCESS!! and wait until VobBlanker is done. The newly created processed files should now be stored in the RIPPED folder. Close vobBlanker

5) Re-name the "RIPPED" folder you created to VIDEO_TS. Open DVDshrink and choose open files, browse to the VIDEO_TS folder containing the newly processed files by vobBlanker, highlight the folder and press ok. All should be ok now, use dvdshrink as you normally would.

Smile and enjoy your backup!
Happy New Year.

I did what saugmon suggested, shutting down every possible app. I could, and it still said "Virtual memory too low!". I did what johnl123 suggested, use Decrypter, then VobBlanker, then Shrink, but at vts_02.VOB, it had an unrecoverable read error, so I ignored that, and it still couldn't get passed that spot. I shouldn't have to update my DVDShrink program, should I?

Maybe a bad pressed original?

You said that same message was on Bad Boy. That is an older disc, and most likely something wrong on it. Damaged/dirty/bum pressed all will give read errors/crc errors.

I'd take it back for another disc.

That madagascar and Badboys: Are they the original dvds or copies that you are trying to re-rip?

Did you have AnyDVD activated and running in the background?

@ blondge
There may indeed be something wrong with the DVD, I had no problem backing it up as explained. Since VTS_08*.VOB repesents the movie you want it should be ok to go back and also highlight VTS_02*.VOB and blank "ALL" the associated PGCs entries in the title set as you did for VTS_08*.VOB , this could correct the problem with shrink. Worth a try.

Ok, I finally got it to work. Here's what I did. Instead of putting it through Decrypter first, I put the original dvd in, opened VobBlanker, and in the "Input Folder" section I navigated to the "Video_TS.VOB" file on the dvd. On the "Output Folder" section I just created a folder and put it on the desktop like johnl123 said, then I blanked out the Video_TS files also. After that, I closed VobBlanker, put a blank dvd in the drive, opened DVD Shrink and went through the normal process, and it burned, all the while AnyDVD was enabled. The dvd works great through and through. Thanks guys for all the help.

The way I see it you got two choices.

1) If you got a dual layer burner, get your self some dual layer media (hopefully on sale because it's not cheap) and burn the ISO using ImgBurn. I know it's got support for burning to dual layer media, and it's free.

2) Re-rip the DVD in file mode and follow the steps described above to get your backup.
