What exactly are the advantages of modding the gamecube with a mod chip? Is it easy to create backups? Also is there a specific place that I would have to go to to get software and Bios's for the chip. Sorry but I am a newbie in gamecube modding, and I want to know if it is worth it.

ok let me explain
good thing's about mod chips for gamecube
1.you can run linux
2.you can run homebrew allthough there isn't much right now
3.you can run legal backups if you own the original games
bad things:
1.you need to order a new gamecube case to accept dvd-r's and rw's
2.you need to set the pot value inorder for the cd's to read also known to cause cd drive death..
3.make sure you know how to solder because you need to know how
bad things about backups
in order to create backup's you need
1.phantasy star online regular not gold edition
2.a broadband adapter
3.the pso streaming application
basicly i would just purchase a copy of freeloader from datel at www.codejunkies.com or just go and get the homebrew kit made by datel for gamecube at www.codejunkies.com and download gcos and install it on the homebrew memory stick and turn the homebrew kit into a removable mod chip

You don't need PSO to create back-ups. Just GCOM and a BBA.
Freeloader only disables the region lock, nothing else. Action Replay and Max Drive Pro can be set up for soft mods however. There are also other methods that use SD cards, streaming with PSO, etc.
Replacement of the top half the case isn't necessary if mini DVD-Rs are used, but considering how much those cost a replacement case is worth it.
Places to check out are modthatcube and tehskeen.net since those have tutorials and the latest downloads in terms of homebrew, BIOS, and other goodies.

i have played backups and always removed case when i want to play. And blank mini-dvd also exist...

Cool, thanks for the replies everyone. Softmodding would be alot easier. I did not know it existed for the gamecube. I'll check out those sites, and see what I can learn :)

Personally, I'd only use a soft mod if I had the stuff to begin with. A chip costs less than a Max Drive Pro or Action Replay and has the added convenience of directly booting back-ups.

Hmm, well one question. If I used action replay and booted a bios can I flash the gamecube with that bios? Or do I have to boot it with action replay every time. I might use a chip, but I don't want to have to solder things on. I know how to do it, but I am not that experienced and don't want to screw anything up.

Yes, if you use an Action Replay you're going to have to use the Action Replay disc everytime you want to play a back-up. Currently, no one has developed a method that involves flashing the GameCube's BIOS.
Just get someone to solder the wires for you if you don't think you can do it yourself.

If all you want to do is play back-ups, I recommend getting a Ninjamod. It's budget priced and has a great BIOS to boot. It's BIOS even has a memory card manager so you don't even have to use the original BIOS at all. It even has onboard flash like the Qoob Pro, so if you wanted to load apps from the chip itself, you have the ability to do so. As far as I know, it's BIOS has all the features of the Qoob Pro's 1.3c BIOS plus the memory card manager and whatever else they've thrown in.
I use the Qoob Pro, since I got it about four months before Ninjamod caught up in terms of features. Qoob Pro is a great chip as well, very reliable. It costs about twice as much as the Ninjamod though, so really it's your call on what to get. They're both great chips.
On side note, the Xeno GC is the cheapest and easiest to install. However, I'd only recommend it if all you plan on doing is playing back-ups since that's all it's really designed for.
Basically, get a Ninjamod if you want to be able to run applications off the chip or just get a Xeno GC if all you plan on doing is playing back-ups.

Ok, a question about backing up games. Is there a way to backup games without the broadband adaptor? Or is this the only way.

As of now, the only way to back-up games is through the BBA.
However, it turns out the Viper GC Extreme offers the ability to create back-ups using USB. Should be for sale now or in a week or two according to boki2002's topic.

hi guys!
i've been trying to gather some info on the xeno gc chip and basically all i want to do is play backups and that's it, this is basically for my kids coz 2 to 3 of our games seems to have stopped working, well one freezes now the other 2 are totally dead. i hope you don't mind the 101 questions. has anybody installed this chip and is it any good? will a complete noob like myself be able to install it (have very very little experience in soldering)? do i need to adjust the pot to be able to play backups of my originals or will a good media like ritek g04 do just fine?
also i read in another thread that this chip has problems with newer NGC US versions i have a platinum GC US which i bought over a year ago will i be able to install it in this unit using the instructions provided?
