i consider myself still new to dvd burning,so at first i didnt know any better and i bought a crapload of 50 spindle cheap dvd media from circuit city(nexxtech).now that i been doing it for a while i just ran out of the cheapies and im ready to start spending the extra money on quality media instead of going after the bargains that go with cheap media.so after the yudens everybody says are the best everybody usually praises verbatim.so i went to best buy and picked up a 50 spindle of verbatim 16x dvd+r's.my question is when i thumbing through all the spindles best buy has to offer what exactly am i looking for to determine wether im getting a good batch,should i look for something specific on the label?can you ever find qaulity taiyo yudens in a actual store or do you have to get them online?lastly what speed should i burn these verbatims i have,should i booktype them,and i heard that you should burn with antivirus software and other related programs turned off,is this true?thanks in advance.my burner is a sony dru-710a.

@dvdfreak1,
Actually you can get High Quality Media for a Great Price if you look at the Sales. You spokeof the 50 pack of Verbatims @ Best Buy. $14.99! That's about 30 cents each, and to answer your booktype question, YES, with DVD+R media it's best to booktype to DVD-ROM for best compatibility with players. Those 16x Verbs are Top Notch Media too! I personally burn THOSE at 8x. But for any other media, I mostly burn @ 4x.Be sure your Burner's Firmware is the latest, this is Important! Everyone has their own opinion about turning Ant-Virus off. My answer is Yes, disable it and close everything you can down that's running in your task bar area next to your clock. If you have always on internet, turn it off by unplugging your ethernet. Taiyo Yudens can be found in stores, it's like a scavenger hunt lately. Sony DVD+R 8x 50 packs are Taiyo Yudens IF they're made in Japan. Fuji DVD+R 8x & DVD-R 8x IF made in Japan are also Taiyo Yuden made.
You'll find lot's of Help here at AfterDawn! Happy New Year! Happy Burning & Remember this: Stay away from Junk Media!

When you go to a local store: Verbatim,you'll see them usually made in taiwan on most of them. Singapore makes some,and India makes some. They should be all ok. Verbatim +16x will code as Mcc-004 and for my benqs,they perform better when burned at 8x and 12x speed!

Maxell/Fuji/Sony: Lots of tys can be found at local stores like staples/wal-mart/Office Depot/Bestbuy/ Office Max on the sony and fuji +8x. You want to find where they are made at. Look for Made in Japan on those labels and they should code as Yuden000-T02.

Maxell: I haven't encountered any ty's on their 8x speed media.Taiyo yuden use to make some of their dash 4x yellowtops. But when you find the japanese spindles of 8x media,they are made by Hitachi of Japan. Another excellent quality manufacturer. Ritek makes quite a bit of their media as well.They'll be marked as made in taiwan.But reports of cmags are being posted on some of those maxells-made in taiwan.

No multi-tasking! Turn everything that can possibly activate off. If you use dvd shrink-Your processor will be maxxed out during the analyzing and encoding stages. Burning wise? I know my processor only runs 5-8% dunging that stage. Print a cover every now and then.

Edit: If you want to see how your pc runs during the backup process,try this free program.It'll show processor speed/memory being used/hard drive space. It's pretty neat!
