in MY opinion, firmware makes a BIG difference in the role of successful burning...
having the most up to date firmware for your particular drive is essential, especially on the newer 16x rated discs...most drives with outdated firmware will not even RECOGNIZE, let alone burn to these newer 16x rated discs...
also, the write strategies are improved upon (usually) with each incremental firmware upgrade...this is GENERALLY true, but there are some instances where an "older" firmware has worked perfectly for someone, then upon updating to a newer one, everything went south...but, this is usually fairly rare and does not happen MOST OF THE TIME~ :)
so, now that you're using taiyo yuden media, good choice by the way....just make sure your drive has the latest firmware from the manufacturer...the cross-flashing firmware and the ones that are omnipatched, i've had quite a lot of experience with cross-flashing, but, unless you want your drive to DO SOMETHING IN PARTICULAR that the OEM/official firmware does not offer...then i would suggest to use the official fw for your drive~ :) besides, cross-flashing and experimenting that ive done, VOIDs the warranty on the drive...the warranty DOES come in handy if you accidently "fry" it within the warranty periods time...or it "just stops working"... :)
