On some DVD's both versions of the movies are on the disc. The only reason you are getting the widescreen instead of the standard format is that you are choosing the widescreen to backup instead of the standard.

On older discs they were two sided. One side was widescreen and one side was full screen. If this is the case use the full screen side.

On other discs (rare) both formats are on the same dual layer disc (I know Monsters Inc. is this way, but that's all I can remember). If you have a disc like this make sure you pick the one that says fullscreen or maybe 4:3

Most movies today are manufactured with widescreen and fullscreen versions of the disc. It's just a matter of getting your hands on the full screen version of the movies that you want.

If you want my $.02, stick with Widescreen. Why on earth would you want to watch 2/3 of a movie?

You're wasting your breathe... :-) A lot of people don't like "watching those black bars across the top and bottom". Personally, I watch the *movie*, not the black bars !! :-D

hallway and other full screeners:

I can see how the "black bars" might be annoying, but come on. Unless you are talking about a TV under 27" or maybe you sit 60 yards away from your TV, you need the widescreen. This is the true picture that the director intended for his audience. It would be like taking a family portrait that completely filled an 8X10 picture and cropping it down to 5X7. Sure, the old distant relatives that no one really cares about get taken away while you and your close relatives remain smiling in the center basking in all your glory, but wouldn't you rather it be the whole family?... :)

I live under a philosophy that my TV size will forever increase. I currently have a 36" and am always planning my upgrades. Seriously,go get a larger TV or better yet a widescreen TV. The DVD's you will have for a lifetime and when you get that larger TV (see philosophy above), you'll wish you had the widescreen format. Well, It probably doesn't matter anyway. The DVD media won't be sticking around that long anyway. :)
