You need to adjust the lazer usinf the white little cog. If you do a google search you can find tons of tuts on it. Rember to use three diffrent types of disks. Good Luck.

Elliot: Hey, do you, uh, think I could come back some time and play with your Xbox?
Karen: Anytime, kid.
Elliot: Bye.
Karen: Oh! Well, would you look at that? This game is called an Xbox. Well. Ha ha ha...

Im as sure as I can be without being there. Of course it might be worse you might have to replace the whole laser assembly. But I would start with the adjustments. What have you got to lose ? A ps2 that only plays ps1 games? Good Luck.

did you rotate the cog a couple teeth at a time ? Ya the grey does indicate its on the way out.

Yeah it would. Now that you have narrowed it down, that it is not fixable.

So, how exactly do you check the cog? I'm not getting how the PS2 can play PS1 games with no problem, but we get a "no data" message when we try to start a PS2 game or play a DVD. This started happening when the machine was about 3 months old. Can they really be this delicate? Is it possible there is a set up issue? And not a hardware issue?

It is possible that it could be many things. With out being there I could not tell you specifically. Have you tried adjusting the laser?
