XBMC not playing .avi's

I have Xbox Media Center and it will not (or recently stopped) playing .avi movies. Can anyone give me an explanation as to why this would be? I am not entirely sure, but it seems like it would play them fine last week before I replaced the hdd in my Xbox.

Oh yeh, and when I try to play one of these files XBMC freezes and I have to reboot my Xbox. Could it be that they are just taking a little bit of time to load? The files are around 180mb each. Thanks
