I have a slimline ps2 with a mod chip, which usually works fine and will play burnt games no problems. I brought Eye toy for the kids for xmas and noticed that whilst playing it the ps2 will shutdown every 10 minutes or so. I assumed it must be over heating but cant work out why my son will play his games non stop for 3 hours without the machine shutting down once. Then when he plays eyetoy it shuts down after about 20 mins and will shut down every 15 mins or so. It also does the same thing with Singstar. The only similarity in the two games is that they both use the usb connection. Could this have something to do with it?

It's been proven that a lot of modchips can cause damage to the PS2. Because the modchips run off of the powersupply in the PS2 to run themselves it's very possible for your PS2 to overheat.

Anyways, if your PS2 is shutting down on it's own, then you should avoid playing the games that make it overheat. Thank your modder for that feature that shuts down the PS2, it's actually SAVING your system. Though you might find it a bit of a nuisance, the person who modded your PS2 installed a modchip system that shuts itself down when it starts overheating, since Sony didn't bother to do that with the slimline.

So Sony hasnt put any overheatin protection system in the slim ps2, so when it overheats is that it its gone, or does it crash or somethin.

Yeah, I can't remember when (I think it was after v7) but Sony decided to take out the circuit which shuts down the PS2 if it overheats. Also, for the slimline, they added a smaller fan. The slimline is pretty much a bare bones system, so adding in a modchip can really screw it up.

Here's something I didn't think about that could help. Stand up the PS2 on it's side (you can do that safely, there's even a stand for it if you're willing to buy it) and have a fan blow onto it's back or into it's back vents. That could help keep the system cool while you play those kind of games.
