Canon Optura not recognized by my computer

This problem is driving me batty and I have not been able to find a solution or any other suggestions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Canon Optura 20 which I bought over a year ago. When I first purchased it I was able to transfer my videos via firewire without a problem. I has been almost a year since I last transferred videos to the PC. So I tried to do that this week and my PC will not recognize the camera. I was able to transfer still pics via USB but unable to transfer video via firewire. Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so how did you fix it? From doing a google search it seems that quite a few number of people have experienced this and some have been able to get it to work but no such luck for me. I just purchased a couple of cables on ebay to see if that is the problem. I should get them next week. In the meantime I wanted to try other suggestions.

Here is what I tried so far with no luck: Uninstalled the firewire card drivers and reinstalled them again, firewire seems to be detected correctly as shown in the device manager, tried using different ports in the firewire card, changed the IEEE1394 drivers from Windows Service Pack 2 to those of Service Pack 1, rebooted computer with camera on and plugged in, also tried to add camera via the Add Hardware Wizard, reinstalling Windows Service Pack 2, BIOS upgrade.

Some expert advice would be appreciated. Sorry for the long post.
