Kind of a vague question, I hope the disk is not blank, like you burned a movie on it, because otherwise it won't play.
If you are asking about +R media and -R media then the answer is -R media will play on all players, where +R media unless booktyped to DVD-Rom will not play on older players.

@arniebear,
Damn that's what I've been doing wrong all this time! I just placed the original on my desk and put a blank on top and left it for a few hours. hehehe =) needed a good laugh

lol well of course I burned something on it. I should have pointed that out. lol. Getting back to the subject I bought some taiyo yuden dvd+r's on ebay a few monthes ago and they played fine on this one dvd player at my house. Then a few monthes later I bought some blank taiyo yuden DVD+R media of newegg.com and they didn't work on that dvd player . so could someone please tell me what is going on?

What's your burn speed? If burning at max or high speeds this can cause some issues with standalones. Is your drives firmware up to date?
Even though they worked for you I would stay away from buying media from ebay - stick w/ newegg or supermediastore.com.

also, are you sure the media is genuine TY??
run a media identifier and post the results..
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...
you may have gotten some fake TY's or your stand alone is just pickey. and lower your burn speeds to 4x or less until you know you have reliable media.
i'm saying that you are a n00b to this, it's just based off your initial post.

Quote: actually I have been burning at 2x, I already had the dvd identifier, and I have been doing this for a couple of years now so im not a n00b at this.
and here you say..
Quote: My burn speed is 8x and yes my firmware is updated
but in the last post you state you burn all at 2X
so tell me........ your sure your not a n00b... it's ok if you are, your here for help, we won't hurt you for asking for help !
i'm not picking on you, it was just that your post sounded like a n00b question, and basically, i treat all responses like as if they poster does not know and was asking for help.
and so i did.
but like i said, perhaps you have a pickey player with certain media. try another quality media type, see if it helps, if not, booktype to dvd rom.

All I'd got to say is "Tai-yo Yu-den ROCK!!" If for some reason your backup(s) didn't play on any of your standalone dvd players, then you'll definitely need to "book type" them into DVD-ROM for compatibility.

there's a few threads on that scam merchant silver tek or silvertek but i'm having trouble finding them, even google searching isn't working. i'm sure the media codes we were talking about were T117 or similar. Either way we had lengthy discussions with ppl swearing blind they were authentic Yuden discs..

i give up, i scanned thru the last 70 pages of this forum, back 'til about March last year, even scanned the usernames to see if anything jogged a memory, but nothing. even searched for silvertek, silver-tek, ebay ty, t117, etc etc etc. arggh couldn't find the few posts we had on this subject. there was even a guy writing page-long replies defending silvertek as selling genuine TY discs. ah well, i tried searching, they were fakes anyway

cool, glad it's not just me. just had to edit my precious reply as i made up a media code 'et117'. i could swear the fakes were T117,. i've tried a few combinations for searches but i bet if i could remember the MID code i/we'd find the threads... the poster who was defending the Silvertek on one thread had a name like subranaman or something but the username eludes me

got the PM from my buddy gear, i was searching for the exact thread to link you as well, but to no avail... :(
anyways, i believe few months back i ripped the SilverTek owner/buyer a new one regarding the authenticity of his so called "Taiyo Yudens"...he mentioned i didn't know what i was talking about to promote further sales of his beloved FAKE Taiyo Yudens...
anyways, i can tell you right now his "Silver-Tek" TYs are NOT genuine Taiyo Yudens...if my memory serves me correctly, these were "made in taiwan" and along with the inner hub coding, they MISERABLY failed the "authenticity" tests~ :)
sorry to be the bearer of bad news...but you got yourself some FAKES there...
1. ALL genuine TYs are "MADE IN JAPAN"..no exception to this...
2. around the inner hub, with these you got being the 8x DVD+R format, the inner hub coding WILL read TG000xxx (with xxx being the batch number of when they were made)- if the above mentioned laser inscribed coding is NOT found, that is another SURE FIRE way to tell and PROVE you got fake Taiyo Yudens...
hope that clarifies things for you dhs58...as others have mentioned, DO NOT BUY media off ebay, unless it's from ME of course~ LOL j/k~ i got plenty to spare and i can guarantee you AUTHENTIC Taiyo Yudens every time! hehehe
