I recently got a movie off of a torrent site, went through all of these file conversion processes, and eventually got it onto a DVD, which I now watch in my player frequently. It just so happens that today in the paper, there is some kid that got found out downloading illegal music off of the internet and his mom got fined 10k since he was a minor. Now, im thinking that this is probably some retard kid that left his e-mail address everywhere and told everyone he knew what he was doing or something, but my mom is now on my case to destroy the disk and stuff because she is really freaked out about it now, but I really do not want to. I mean, there was over 200,000 downloads from torrentspy for this movie, there is no way that they can do something to that many people? And one last thing, I redid my OS last night so any information about the movie and stuff that was on my computer has been eradicated. I have Comcast Digital Cable ISP so my IP address is constantly changing. I just need some reassurance to give to my mom so she will get off of my back.

MPAA/RIAA/DMAA are spending tons of money trying to hunt down hundreds of thousands of IP address's and who they are associated with. They are strapping sniffers on their own torrents waiting for people to hit them. I read something that said they are fining anywhere from $3k-$10k for music and $50k and up for movies. My suggestion is don't fart around with that stuff. If you want to backup movies go join a club or membership to an online movie rental or your local rental joint. I have a friend of mine who's ip was traced and he received a notification from his provider stating they received a listing of IP's from MPAA requesting his logs and information. Too risky anymore. I'm sure BC, [founder of bittorrent] will figure something out in the future to hide your IP during P2P, but at this point there is too much too lose. that's my 2 cents.

How long do you think it would take for one of them to take action if they found out? I got the torrent about 3 week ago and I havent recieved anything like that.

well its a little too late to be worried now.u know (water under the bridge---crying over spilt milk) just to name a few. ive heard private bt sites are better than public. and u could try using peer guardian as well. but in the long run its not really worth it because most of the time the quality sucks or its a win rar file with a pass word (and the web site is in some foriegn language). stick with dvd rips u do yourself.

It take like a month 1/2 to get a letter from MPAA.It will list all the stuff that they caught you downloading and tell you to go to a website and follow the instructions on what to do.First it will tell you to delete any illegal content on the HDD then input some information then agree to not download illegal movies again. But thats just the first warning...

It doesn't matter that you have a Dynamic IP they will ask your ISP who had that IP at that time and they will find out that it was you. After that I sign up for Netflix.

well it really depends what country you live in and the laws that govern it.

Doubt if peer guardian is going to work as my server has a log of where and how much i download.Unfortunately at this stage they cant say what i/ve downloaded yet but they cxan say how much i download.
The technology to work out exactly what i downloaded is about 2 years away according to my server so i guess if they really wanted to know the finer details they would have to breach the privacy laws to get my server to co operate.
84 gig a month isnt very much on a 512 connection considering i spend 4hours or more on video conferencing to all parts of the world per day

if you share music you will eventually get caught, but if you want to appease your mother, promise not to do it again and then dont!!!
