Hi, I just bought a Lynksys wireless router and I'm not able to create a network between my two computers. Here's the situation.

My router is connected on my Windows 98 computer, the one which is directly connected to the internet via a modem (DSL). My other computer is a Windows XP Home Edition computer with a wireless network card on it.

I'm able to get connected to the internet with my XP computer, which means that the two computers ping each other, they connect perfectly. The only problem is that I can't share files between them. When I create a virtual network drive, the other computer doesn't see it. It only sees itselfs. Here's how I do it.

With my Windows XP, I go in Control Panel, Network, Network Manager (sorry if these aren't the exact terms, my computer's in french). I create a small or home business network. The name of my XP computer is "Mike" (without the quotes). The name of the workgroup is Mikenetwork. At the end, I create an installation CD on my USB drive. Then, I install it on my Windows 98 computer. The name of the computer is "Louise" (without the quotes). This is the computer which the router is connected to. When I install the network, I put as the workgroup name Mikenetwork.

Then after, I go on my XP computer, in my shared folder I share "My Shared Music" by right clicking the folder and share and all the stuff.
Then, when I go on my 98 computer, I see the folder, but I can't open it. It says that the directory was not found.

I think the problem is in the IP configurations. Here are the stats.

Router's IP: 192.168.1.1
Windows 98 computer IP: 192.168.1.2
Windows XP computer IP: 192.168.1.3

Here are screenshots of my XP computer with the IP configuration:

Secondly, my P.P.P.o.E. Adapter, I don't know what's the use of this card, but it may help you to help me:

Well, I think I gave all the information I have. So, if someone could help sharing files between these 2 computers and keeping the internet connection on these 2, it would be highly appreciated!

do you have win xp home or professional. Win 98 uses wins for name resollution and xp uses dns. You will have to create a workgroup of the same name on both computers. The win 98 you will have to follow the netbios naming conventions, I think it is no spaces, no more than 15 characters and no special characters. Actually there are a few special characters, do not remeber what they are. Also you might not want to use caps. Then if xp professional turn off simple file sharing. If home, you are stuck with simple file sharing. I would not recomend sharing the root of your C drive. Share individual folders. Also xp home uses the guest account, so make sure it is not disabled. Also create a password for each user on each machine. Since it is peer to peer you will have to have all user accounts on both PC's if the user account is going to access resources on the other machine. In other words, the pc you are going to access has to have your user id on it. Also turn off all firewalls , especially win xp's built in one.
