I recently aquired a used PS2 from a friend. The console turns on but there is no video or sound. When I first turn it there is a slight flash on the screen. I am using brand new AV and power cables.

I was wondering if there was a main cause for this and also is it repairable without having to order parts.

I plan on opening it as I have worked on them in the past but mostly for "disk read errors" Is there something I should be looking for?

THANK YOU!

bios corruption is the most likely cause, most often caused by a failed attempt at modding.

Well that was my first assumption but after opening the console their is no sign of atempted mods. Is there a way to repair this?

cant make suggestions without knowing what the cause is, all things are repairable, it boils down to is it worth the cost.

you have to trouble shoot it and find out where the video stream stops at along it's path from the CD/DVD>>>>laser>>>>processor>>>>RF converter>>>>>output to the TV.

if you know next to nothing about electronic repair I'd say your chances of fixing it are slim to none. this approach your trying to do is what i call 'Trouble shooting by mastercard' and we call these people 'Box swappers' in the aircraft avionics industry. you need to know what is going on rather then swapping out parts hoping this is gonna fix it. in a playstation this can cost you several hundered dollars and you still burn out parts that were bad but you didnt fix the problem that caused it to be bad, then you spend countless more hours and $$$ thinking that part is good because you swapped it out and now the real problem may be fixed and the 'thought good' part is failing you.
