i have a win 98 setup cd and i have a second harddrive i wanted to install it on.when i reboot it doesnt automatically load.and when i open the cd folder and double click setup, it says it cant and that i have to
start windows in mdos or something like that.how do i do this fresh install, and if mdos is the cmd prmpt then what do i type?please help.....

why put it on the 2nd hd? what is on the 1st hd? what is the boot sequence in the bios as to boot from a bootable cd than the cdrom drive should be 1st to boot. also read the forum rules above about posting.

Go into your Bios setup -- and make sure it is set to start from whatever drive you have the Windows Cd in !

Hi all, Happy New Year!
Today I have a headache ;^)
Ahhh, dual-booting OS's or triple-booting incl. Linux or whatever - this takes some planning.
Ideally, you will make a FAT partition on the master HD of the primary controller, and make it active of course, and it will be C:\
This step alone (while one of the most basic PC skills for years) is beyond some peoples' abilities these days...
Apply DELPART as required, if needed to blast out any NTFS partitions.
Then, you make the FAT16 partition with a DOS (Win98) bootdisk and FDISK, and FORMAT.
If you say 'no' to large volume support (it is really asking if you want FAT32, you say no) and then ask for the largest partition possible, you will get 2GB C:\ partition perfect for multi-booting.
Hell, it's probably even large enough for your whole Win98 install too :^)
Install Win98 first. (Then Linux.) Then WinXP, which will generate a delightful multi-boot menu, and call C:\ the 'system partition'.
Note: Linux requires FAT not FAT32 for multi-boot operation.
But even without Linux, it's a good thing. Your critical WinXP startup files (boot.ini and NTLDR) will be easily accessible and not hidden by NTFS, and one day this fact might please you greatly... LoL
