modern info for GC newbie

I'm looking into this for a friend who isn't overly technology swavy. So I'm trying to figure out the easiest way to do things.

So what I'm wondering is. If I get a modchip does this work just like w/ an ps2 or xbox? I put the mod. Rip a preivously purchased game w/ something like dvd decryptor, re-burn the image fully intact and boot?

I'd rather go w/ a hardware solution, something that once I figure out how to boot backed up discs easy to go?

Also I was looking at modchips and it said only need to solder 4 wires but didn't say where, was wondering if anybody knew where I could instructions for that. Looking @ modchip.com gc modchip.

Just get a Viper GC Extreme.

ok I saw that, but the thread didn't really talk about after you've got the chip installed what you need to do to play burnt games. Or if there is anything special to do to disks?

It's like any other mod chip for playing games. But, the most common form for gamecube backups are to get a scenerip and burn it. That way, you don't have to worry about setting up any hardware for streaming the backup TO the computer from the cube in order to back it up in the first place.

yah thats way to complicated for the person I'm looking into this for. So in theory I should be able to just to rip and burn discs and play the burnt hardware on the gamecube?

also I was reading about using a different size reader to support dvd5's versus minidvds what is that all about?

Viper GC Extreme is the only chip that allows you to backup games using USB, which is why I said just get that and read that topic. All other chips and exploits require a broadband adapter. As of now, it's the best mod chip available. So yes, you'll be able to rip, burn, and play back-ups. GC is like Xbox in that you can't use a PC DVD-ROM to rip games, so streaming from the console is the only way to do it.

Full size DVD+/-R (DVD5) can be used as long as you play without the top half of the case or get a replacement. Nothing major. The reason for not using mini DVD+/-R is that in the long run, it's much cheaper to just get a replacement case and full size DVDs.

On a side note, the difficulty of downloading scenerips and using a GC to back-up games are about the same considering you have to be able to set them up in the first place. If you know how to use Bittorrent clients it'd be easier to get scenerips like silver95 suggested, but if you have no idea how to do either, then it's a matter of what you're willing to learn and teach you friend.

thanks for the info everybody, so now I'm a little confused. You said I need to stream the rips via usb, but I can use dvd5's? So is that a choice? like can I stream them or mod the unit and have it play dvd5's? and on top of that, I looked into mini dvds this morning and they weren't that super expensive. So if I get this viper chip do I have to stream or if I shell out the money can I run games via a disc in the actual game cube? If not is there is a chip that well allow this.

Thats sorta my ultimate goal. Being able to play games via mini dvds

The Viper GC Extreme supports back-ups (both mini and full size DVD) as well as streaming. It can do everything you asked.
