SONY 500AX playback problems

I recently purchased the 500ax, but I am having huge problems simply getting a dvd or cd to play. Its set to master alone on the secondary IDE. When I have the secondary master set to "Ultra DMA" I can play cds but dvds start up blocky with tons of static and eventually crash. To troubleshoot, I set the IDE to "PIO only"... and now everything "works"...but the problem is, cd's and dvd's run at a slower speed and both have staticy sound. I've run multiple cds and dvds to the same result. I can rip in PIO, but it runs at only 1.1x.

Can anyone help me with this seemingly unsolvable problem? Is it my motherboard or bios? I'm running an ASUS A7A266 with a 1.33 gig Athon.

Bad drive? Please HELP! Thanks!
