Ok. this one is not the best method.
But it sounds like ur a real n00bie.
So the easiest software you can get is DVDx
You can do everything in one program.

Things you need to download:

DivX ;-) 3.11 Alpha

you can download divx 5 too if you want, but you gotta encode with DivX 3.11

DVDx

good luck

clownface,
Does your home dvd player support SVCD format? This way you could use Eazy VCD and convert to SVCD. Eazy VCD does a "on the fly rip". DivX, AVI,Xvid can only be played on your pc (for now).

Then your best option here if you just wan't to store backups on your pc is to go DVD2DivX. VCD quality really sucks but SVCD video quality is astonishing. You can squeeze a dvd backup to DivX to roughly 700 megabytes. I recommend you use Vidomi. You'll need a dvd ripper such as DVD Decrypter.
