I keep reading here Verbatim, TY and Maxell made in Japan are among the best media. Today I went by the store and discovered the Maxwell DVD-+R they sell are made in Taiwan. Is it a big deal or what?
the Maxell made in taiwans are NOT as good as the made in japan (made by Hitachi, very good stuff); however, that is NOT to say that the MIT Maxells are bad...
they will usually be Ritek coded and are decent discs, while i have to admit, they are NOT Taiyo Yuden or Hitachi quality, they are in no way BAD QUALITY discs~
you should be fine with those, BUT, if you CAN find some MADE IN JAPAN Maxells, DO purchase those INSTEAD~ :)
Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

I don't think you're going to find any verbatim's made in japan. They are primarily made in taiwan. Best taiwan made media. Every bit as good as TY's imho.
It seems hard (here in Houston Tx) to find made in Japan DVD media. I used my Walmart gift card & was able to find one Japaneze made Sony 50 pack. All the other discs (regardless of brand) said made in Taiwan. However I found another Japanese manufactured Sony 50 pack at a Walgreens the other day. Just one. All the other packs (every brand) were Taiwan made which is why I prefer to buy TY discs online...
Some of the Taiwanese maxells are coding as Cmags for canadian members. Not many, but enough to make me weary.
I've got no issues with taiwanese maxell or sony. Most of those taiwanese maxells will code as ritek media for both format. The cmags do have a chance in the dash format. But the price for those riteks-usually 30 cents each is too much.
The taiwanese sony are very good: SonyD11 in the plus 8x format, Sony08D1 for both japanese and taiwanese sony dash 8x.Very good quality for either country.
For ritek media, you can find them on sale for 20 cents each every now and then on the Office Depot brand 8x speed media. These perform perfect for me and a lot cheaper than the maxell riteks.
Verbatim and Taiyo yuden both use Advanced Metal AZO dye. These are the top dogs in their class.I also like those maxell hitachi's and riteks.
I booktype-using plus format only. The prices on the web for plus format are higher than the dash. That's odd, because local store prices are the same for either format and either country. That's why I buy most of my media locally/on sale and I don't pay over 30 cents each! 30 cent tys or 30 cent riteks? I take the tys.
I'm starting to worry about my Maxell media because I have scratches on them and I just brought a 50 pack Sunday only used 6 of them or so and had to throw 3 in the trash for other reasons. What the difference between the Maxell media and Verbatim?
Well I dont know what would be causing your problem but I am thinking about Enabling the DMA of your Drives I followed a link awhile ago, that I saw on a post here on the Site by alkohol if you can Find a post by Him he will have detaled instruction on how to Enable DMA on your drives. Another thing you could try is burn at a 4x speed if you are not already doing so and maybe even try uninstalling your drives dont wory they will reinstall themselves on restart, The way to do this is right click on my Computer click properties then click on the hardware tab then Device manager then beside the DVD/CD-ROM drives to the left should be a plus sign click on that then you should see your Drives listed by Brand name right click on them then click uninstall. I hope that helps good luck
