Is dual layered simply a double sided dvd disc or, is it something else?

thanks. so when backing up dvds or games how do i tell if it need a dual layered dvd.

Single layer= 4.7GB
Dual layer= 8.5GB
Use a program like DVDShrink to compress DVD video to fit on single layer media...

If Shrink can't rip it, then rip it to your HD first with DVDFab Decrypter...
http://dvdidle.com/free.htm
There's also a guide on how to use DVDShrink at the first link... Both programs are free!!!
