First of... I have backed up 0ver 300 movies always leaving AC3 5.1 sound on there. But my question comes because I just bought a surround sound system, and am kind of wondering what DTS is?? Any ideas???

DTS is supposed to be a dolby clone. I don't know if it has caught on as much as dolby. Not sure about the compatibility. I think the player would have to say it supports DTS and Dolby for it to work with the DTS part. ADs info:
Quote:
DTS is a private company that develops audio formats, pretty much like Dolby. With term "DTS" people generally speaking refer to DTS's digital surround audio technology that is used widely on DVD-Video discs, just like Dolby's Dolby Digital/AC3.

Sounds like if you select DTS only and your system doesn't support DTS, you listen to silence.

sigh, I don't think we'll ever run out of DD-DTS flame wars. For backup purpose, keep the DD and drop DTS since DTS takes more space and you know what, it is not better sound quality than DD, just dropping different portions than DD.

DVD players should not have problems with DTS digital out to your receiver, unless you have an ancient dvd player that predates finalization of DTS on DVD.

Your receiver should decode DTS, unless it is an ancient or lowerst of the low receivers.
