I recently purchased a 17" LCD TV/Monitor made by Envision from newegg.com for about $370 including tax and delivery. I find myself wondering if I could have gotten away with buying a LCD Computer monitor with DVI input (which are cheaper) and hooked that up to my cable box. The guy at Circuit City said that it would work fine, but I never trust those guys. Anyway, I'm not convinced that a computer monitor would be a good choice to view cable TV, especially HDTV. Which brings me to the issue of standard vs. widescreen. I know that even if a 4:3 LCD computer monitor does display decent video when connected to cable, it obviously still wouldn't display HDTV in widescreen. But how would it look squeezed down to 4:3? Would it still be displayed in HD (720 or better) but just with the sides cut off? I guess what I'm realy trying to find out is if I connect my cables box's DVI output to a LCD Computer monitor's DVI input what would the resulting display look like????? For arguments sake lets say the resolution on the LCD monitor is 1024 x 768. How would standard TV (480i) look? How would HD look? My last thought is this: Is there any difference between computer resolution and TV resolution? All else remaining the same, is a 1024 x 768 computer monitor different in any way from a 1024 x 768 TV besides the tuner? I would love to hear from anyone using a LCD computer monitor hooked directly to their cable box. Any thoughts?

2 wrongs don't make it right, but it damn sure make us even!

i honestly dont know. when you try using wide screen resolutions on an LCD screen it usually just stretches it out to fill all the pixels. id imagine that unless you had a wide screen monitor HDTV would probably have the same effect of stretching it to fit.

but like i said i dont actually know for sure you have to try it

it would be exactly the same as watching a dvd in widescreen mode on it, or on ANY television, the picture fits the monitor, you dont need a monitor to fit a picture. it will look like you could imagine a picture with a black bar above and below it! wow how bout that ay

Does your cable box give you display choices? I have hi def Comcast. If you leave the TV on, turn off the cable box and push "setup" on the remote (again with cable box "off" but obviously plugged in) it will give quite a few display options for the outgoing signal.
