The subject says it all really, the problem I have is I have a lot (30 or so) large Avi & Mpg files (600mb - 1.5Gb each) stored on my hard drive, after a while, maybe weeks or months, they start to corrupt, I get mixed or missing pixels, picture breakup, sound breakup, & worse case scenario the file won't play past a certain point, then it's bin it time.
I also have the same problem with Jpg pictures & mp3's, but never Bmp's, or any of my programs, zip files, wav's & so on.
I've done the obvious & Chkdisk'ed my drive (I use WinXP Pro SP2) & have no bad sectors or file structure errors, at one point I re-installed windows out of frustration after formatting & re-partitioning my drives, but to no avail, I thought it could be hardware trouble, but why is it only specific files?
If anyone could shed any light on this I would be eternally grateful as this is now doing my head in.

Thanks for reading, Nish

Do you Defragment your Hard Drives on a Regular Basis?? A Badly Fragmented Drive will cause file Corruption over time....

Also codec Conflicts can cause your Playback to be Pixelated and cause the audio to be Distorted ect...Make sure that you only have the Codecs that you absolutly need installed and that you don"t have seleral codecs that decode the same format Like several DivX or Mpeg-4 codecs...
You can get away will Just Installing "FFDShow Decoder" and configureing it to decode all Supported Formats and it will lwt you watch pretty Much any file without the need to aditional Codecs to be Installed....

Good Luck

Thanks for your time Minion

One point you raise is interesting, about drive fragmentation, I havn't defraged my drives for ages because I simply don't have the 15 or so % free space to do so, so the possibility of corruption is a good one, but why is it only targeting "media" files & not all the content on my drives?

Thanks again, Nish

I don"t know why it is Only media files that are getting corrupted but maybe because media files are So Much bigger than other Files on your system so the Chances of them getting Corrupted is More than with Smaller files....

The Defragmenter I use is called "VoptXP" and it is One of the fastest defragmenters and it is a very Small program...I run it every day before i shut down my PC, Actually I have it set so When i run it it defragments both of my drives and then automaticly shuts down my PC for me....

Cheers

Thanks Again Minion

While I'm not entirely convinced on the fragmentation idea, since it's not just large files that are corrupting, but also small jpg's, & why do .dll & .exe's not get corrupted?, it is well worth giving "VoptXP" a go, I'll try it out & let you know.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply, Nish
