How to create correct format DVD

I want to burn a cd that can be read on my DVD/VCR player. Booklet for DVD says it can read formats (DVD , DTS, VCD/SVCD). When I ripped a movie to put on my pocket pc, I didn't have any problems and even created 2 CD's in mpeg-1 format that read on my desktop pc DVD, but didn't read on my DVD/VCR player I have connected to my TV.
What do I have to run or select to get it in one of the readable formats ?

I asked the above question in a reply to a previous post, and Dela asked, "Did you create standard compliant VCD ?"

I then asked, but didn't get ay further reply :

I used SmartRipper, DVD2AVI, and TMPGEnc to get my final .mpg pocket PC movie. Do I select it as a parameter in one of these or do I need to run a different program in order to get the "standard compliant VCD"

Convert to SVCD m8 as VCD video quality really sucks. Use DVD2SVCD with CCE (Cinema Craft Encoder). Be PREPARED for LONG encoding process depending upon the speed of your processor. This is by far the best method to backup dvd2svcd.
