Is there a way to diagnose the Qoob SX chip to make sure it is installed properly and that everything is in working order? That the chip itself is not damaged either?

And, is it normal that, when using the 1.3c BIOS, I don't get the "Unable to read disc :(" message but only "..." when a disc fails to load?

Thanks,

If the disc stops spinning and the ellipses (...) are still on screen, it'll give you the error message shortly eventually.

If it can play originals, then it's installed correctly. If it can't read back-ups with the 1.3c BIOS, then you've got a different problem. What kind of media are you using and what program did you burn with? Give us some more information and we'll try to help you out.

I already gave a lot of details as to the burner and and media I use int this thread: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/275099#1602748

I'm leaning more and more towards the faulty chip option, because, for the life of me, I can't see what else it can be!

Venom5880 is right, if it plays originals than its installed properly. If it reads originals properly, then your laser shouldn't need changing. Have you tried 1.3a bios?. I'm just throwing in suggestions here, afterall, trying won't harm but might do good.

The first BIOS I installed was 1.3a but I couldn't load any of the copies; so I flashed my chip with the 1.3c thinking it would solve my problem: I was wrong :)

What I find really weird, is that the media that doesn't run on my cube, runs on my friend's. And my POT value seems to be OK and I don't dare to take it lower than I already did (see the other thread for details).

Btw, how old is your cube and how many hours do you expect it has been played?. One easy suggestion also is cleaning your laser, it has helped with a bunch of DRE's for PS2 owners, who knows.

My cube is 3 years old, give or take a week :) I'm not what you would call a hardcore gamer, what I mean by that is that I actually have a social life (no offense to anybody ;) ). I couldn't really tell you how much gametime my cube has seen, but it most certainly hasn't been overused.

By the way, how can I interpret the results of the "check media" option (pressing A on the Qoob load screen). It spits out a bunch of letters and numbers when I do it. Is it supposed to do that? If yes, what do they mean?

has anyone ever run into the problem of running 1.3c and not being able to run things like gc-linux or backups but reflashing with 1.3a and having everything run just fine?

Cleaning the lens every once in a while can help, even if you don't use it much. I had to clean my PlayStation's lens (the original one) since it was taking forever to load.

The media check is supposed to tell you whether or not it can read the data sectors properly, and if any are bad it'll give you a message saying so. It'll even give working back-ups error messages some times. Don't really know how's it useful.

Also, that bit about reflashing to 1.3a doesn't have to be done, or at least with the Qoob Pro it doesn't. The 1.3c BIOS should have the boot method of 1.3a available from the settings list (the one with video mode, audio fix, etc.). Something like drive mode or whatever should be at or near the bottom. If I remember right, A is the one used with 1.3a and B is the one 1.3c uses by default.

oh yea and i think 1.3c sucks i still use 1.3a havnt had a problem with that, oppose th 1.3c that is very selective of what disks it reads...

There's a 1.3b, but I think it wasn't stable, so no one uses it.
