Well maybe. I'd get a professional install if I were you. I couldn't give you any soldering advice, as I have no soldering skills. Go with a good modchip like a Matrix Infinity or DMS 4.

40. Q. I have a middle school diploma, a bottle of Jack Daniels, and a soldering iron, should I solder my modchip myself?
A. C'mon. What do you think? Absolutely, unequivocally, definitely, without question, NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Unless you are an experienced solderer, don't go near your motherboard with a 10 foot pole. There's no quicker way to ruin a perfectly good PS2, than with a shot of JD and a soldering iron. Pay a Pro. It'll save you money down the road. http://www.teammodders.com is a good place to start.

26. Q. I'm in the market for a modchip or premodded console. What are some reputable sites I can order from?
A. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/251223 In addition modchip.com and norcalmods.com are supposed to be reliable

a ps2 is about 20x harder to mod than a ps1 . the solder points are smaller and there are about 15 more of them .

I would recommend "No" as well. I've chipped about five PS1's...they were pretty easy. I've chipped 2 PS2's...I probably spent more in materials than if I had just paid someone to do it...and it took me 3 hours. You have to solder to the legs of those high density chips and on my V9, I had to use an x-acto knife to rough up the pads for like 4 of the solder points to even get the solder to stick (oh...and be careful that you don't scrape the things off!). I have moderate soldering skills and a good eye...that's the only reason I even attempted it myself.

Decide for yourself and make Fry's your friend (for materials) if you decide to do it yourself.
