I've recently come into posession of what seems to be a ps2 (v4 - U2) with a very broken laser. I don't really want to buy a new laser (just to have it die on me again). So I'm curious... What are my options as far as loading directly to HDD without ever touching the laser... I know that I can load my games through my pc onto my hdd and play them, but what about formatting, and booting?

I've heard the the DMS3 and 4 do it through Devmode 2, but what are some other options perhaps that are mod free, or not as pricey as the DMS3 and 4 (which seem to be running around $50)

Thanks a lot,
Sotaku

Just buy swap magic and put a memory card exploit then use hd loader v0.7c. You dont even need a laser for that because even broken ps2 laser run cd games! Get it of iHackPS2.org very cheap

v7 w/ Crystal Chip 1.1, Boot Manager 1.8, and HD Loader v0.7c w/ 80 GB HD
v7 w/ DMS4 Pro and Toxic OS .41 w/ 200 GB HD

Really? That's awesome... I kept seeing that you needed a PS1 game to fire off the exploit. Thanks alot...

Or you could just compile an exploit disc: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/109289
