What is DVD=R

I recently purchased a DVD burner from overseas by Sansui (model S322D). It says it can only record on DVD=R discs and NOT DVD-R or DVD+R. Is this some proprietary format? I could not find the discs in best buy.

Not meaning to be insulting....but is that the right model number? I can't find anything, whether it be a computer burner or standalone dvd player/burner that has that model number. Any chance of a few more details?

Whoops I re-read the manual and it was DVD-R, there was a smudge/line on the specs page. Yikes!
