Loading PS1 Games with a game shark?

Can you load PS1 Games with the game shark method. I have done PS2 cd and PS2 DVDs. But i cant get PS1 games to work? When i try it the screen goes back from the game shark to the PS2 menu showing my memory card and a ps1 black disk. When i click on the black disk it runs the normal ps1 loading screen and it stops there on the ps1 logo and never goes to the game. I have game shark versions 1.9 and a PS2 version 4.
