I always use tayio yuden for burning dvds but i need a good brand for dvd data back up files such as clips and pictures, i am currently using hp x8 but only because i couldn't return them back to the store, sometimes when i try to open a disk that has data on the hp on my sony drive it says incorrect function i have no ideal why but if i put it in my benq dvd burner drive it works ? anybody have a clue why it reads in one drive but not the other one ?

Is the firmware up to date on the drive that will not read the disc? That is the usual problem for a drive that will not.

As for the data question, why not use the TY's also? I know they are a few pennies more, but if your data is important to you....
