DVD Recorder for dish pvr and minidv???

A few days ago I picked up a phlips dvdr615/37 for $139. I have not recorded any movies yet, but so far as a basic DVD player it works ok. I will be mainly copying shows off of a dish network pvr and my panasonic miniDV camcorder initially. I have a 4 year old that has alot 30 min shows I want to put about 4 or 5 shows on a single dvd.
I have been researching for the last few days and only come up w/ more questions. So I am asking for help and input for questions below.

two questions
1) Is a +R recorder good for what I am looking to do, or should I be looking at -R. I am confused about editing an compatibilty.

2) For $139 is this machine a no brainer or are there some better options at around the $200 price point. There seems to be a love/hate for this particular machine.
