Cant burn CD-r but can DVD-r

Hi all
I have a problem i cant seem to burn cd-rs but can dvd-rs i have a Sony DVD RW DW-U12A burning DVD-rs work fine all the time but when i burn a CD-r i get the power calabration error same all story with everyone i have upgraded the firmware and have used expensive media so i no its not the media. It was working about 3 months ago perfect.
I sometimes get it to burn a CD-r after about 50 tries.
Have tryed disabling and enabling driver but thats not helped either.
The burner is only 2 years old so i know its not faulty as i would not be able to burn DVD-rs with it.
Is there a CD lense cleaner i can get to clean the lense on the burner.
Please can you help its driving me nuts.
