Motorola V220 Msg Memory Meter Low

Recently I started to get a "msg mem low" msg whenever sending a text, I cleared everything out of the inbox & outbox but still kept getting the msg. Then last w/e the 'phone stopped sending or receiving texts altogether! When I finally found the memory meter option it is only showing 1, & there seems to be no way to alter it. Can anyone help? Is there a problem with the SIM card? Battery is fully charged. Can anyone tell me what's going on & how to fix this problem?
