Hi, this is my first post here. I know this may sound very dumb, but I don't know ANYTHING about computers. I'm a University science student, but if you asked me simple things about a computer, I would not know where to start. Here's my probelm:
Right now, I'm using Windows XP, I have a router, Linksys, but instead of using it, I just want to use the internet throgh the Cable modem, and not through the Router. I tried changing the settings but it seems that it doesn't work. Can someone help me changing the settings from using the interent through the network setting using a router, to just using the interent connect without a router, just through the Cable modem. Thanks!
there shouldnt be any settings to change. your computer (xp) should pick up your ip address automatically. just unplug from your router and plug into back of your computer. if that doesnt' work, you can
1) open up web page (might display "page cannot be found")
2)click on "tools"
3)click on "internet options", "connections", "lan settings" then see if any check box is checked. sometimes universities will tell you (or program in for you a proxy server address to access school intranet. make sure that if it is checked that you disable, BUT WRITE DOWN THE IP ADDRESS IN THERE for later use. you can either leave all boxes unchecked or check the one that has "automatically detect"
-it also depends on what browser you are using, i use FireFox so my paths aren't exactly the same. there are also other options to do, let me know if any of this helped, if not there are other ways of going about this.
make sure that you don't have zone alarm or any other firewall preventing your ip address from being detected, try disabling all firewalls including your windows xp one that is set up by default. if you don't know how to do this then:
1)right click network neighborhoods, could say network places on desktop
2)click on properties
3)you should see a firewall option listed to the left, click on that and disable
4)you will also be able to see your network card there as well. make sure that it says enabled. right click on that and go to properties, then from there click on "TCP/IP" and click properties, make sure that both options when they pop up say "obtain automatically" if not write down those ip's and switch to automatically.
-another thing, when you rigt click on network places and go to properties to see your network card that says enabled, make sure that have no options in there too that say that the network is "bridged". if you see any connections that are being bridged, then disable those and now try.
if you know how to see what ip address your using then see what ip you are pulling too. if not go to
1) start
2)run
3) type in.. ipconfig (that shows your ip address)
4)with your router disconnected and your computer plugged into it type in... ipconfig /release, all zeros should pop up. then type in ... ipconfig /renew
5)this should renew your network cards ip address
6) try restarting your computer with it plugged directly into the modem.
I just tried what you told me and it says something along the lines of "the operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation"
there is always the possibility of a virus causing this, the only thing that leads me to believe that it is not a virus is because your network card allows you to get online through your router. your internal settings must have gotten a littly screwy. just a suggestion but this might even help you out, because right now i am a little perplexed from the error that it gave you.
1) right click on your "my computer" icon and go to "properties"
2)click on "hardware" then "device manager" and you will see your network card.
3)right click on your network card and click "properties" see if the message says "it is working properly", then if so try clicking on the troubleshooting button and that might help.
