I had BlazeDVD for a while which was great, but I'm not going to pay $50 to keep it. What else is comparable?

I'm not aware of any free DVD players, but in my experience, PowerDVD is the best by far

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

DVD support for WMP.

When evolution selects its agents, it does so at a cost, makes demands in exchange for singularity, and you may be asked to do something against your very nature. This force, evolution, is not sentimental. Like the Earth itself, it knows only the hard facts of life's struggle with death. All you can do is hope and trust that when you have served its needs faithfully, there may still remain some glimmer of the life you once knew.

If you're talking about a program to play DVDs, I've used PowerDVD and InterDVD or something like that. The PowerDVD was version 5 or 6 and the Inter was 7? Something like that. Both are great.
