There have been comments in these forums from people who have said they were satisfied with their ilo DVDR.

They are dreaming. My first was a gift. A DCDR04 from WalMart. It lasted three satisfying months before it stopped being able to read its own DVDs. How satisfied do you think I was then?

The excellent ilo help had me download what they called firmware (which it isn't; actual firmware can't be downloaded, that's why it is firm), and that didn't work, nor any other suggestion.

They sent me a replacement, which meant I had to tape my games and shows.

The replacement, a refurbished unit, was even worse than the original had been.

The replacement's replacement was ok for a month except for taking 15-30 seconds to begin recording. Somewhat satisfying although without TIVO I'd miss snippets I wanted to attach to game or show DVDs.

Now, the last four days I have two duke game DVDs I recorded on the box, and neither readable anymore. Three other of its DVDs it wouldn't read for several tries but then did. Once? I'm afraid to try. Two other of its DVDs it won't read. These were all initiated in the last few days. I'm afraid to add to an existing/previous DVD.

During phone discussions their help personnel made comments that on the surface added up to the obvious: the manufacturer deliberately vents boxes it knows have big problems.

So, those who say they are satisfied with an ilo box may be dreaming. I hope the dream doesn't become a nightmare.

I am elderly on a low income and soon, likely, will not have my DIRECTV and TIVO, and without local channels will be up Dumbya creek for audio-visual entertainment. The GOPpy ilo DVDR04 has cost me at least 120 hours of recording that I can't recover.

ilo sucks terribly
