Hello,
I just got a new Dell today. I ordered it with only a DVD Rom (TS-H352C). As soon as I unbowed it I installed a NEC 3550A burner. I then fired it up and installed all my burning programs. The problem now is it takes almost an hour to burn a disc that my old computer would do in 17 minutes. It is set for DMA if avalible but it keeps transferring in PIO mode. I uninstalled both units but it did it again. When I physically installed the NEC, I installed it as the master and the TS-H352C as the slave. I also updated the firmware on the NEC to 1.y4RPC1. I am using TY +R's. Any thoughts as to why it is running so slow?
Thanks,
Dana

I went to the IDE controllers to see if it was on PIO again, it was. Everything is set on DMA, but 1 of the primary IDE is on PIO. Should I have 2 primary IDE icons and 1 secondary IDE icon? The picture only shows 1 and my old Dell only has 1 each. I swapped the burner and the rom's positions in the tower. When I did that, Sonic would only power up one. It said it would make a copy on the hard drive then I would have to insert a blank disc. So I swapped them back. The NEC is back to the primary position. I am really stumped.
Thanks,
Dana

in your new dell put the new burner as slave and leave the original as master. double check ur pins to make sure there right on ur new burner and put the pin back to the original setting on the original burner. then follow bbmayos guide(the one aabbccdd gave u).when u restart pc, windows shold say something like ..new hardware found and should install drivers and it should be set on dma at this point.

I will try that in a few minutes. From memory this is the way it is set up. The NEC (burner) is set to master and the TS (rom) is set to CSEL. Now is what I what to do is set the TS to master and the NEC to slave, correct? What does CSEL stand for?
Thanks for the help, I will give it a shot.

Got it fixed! The computer came with only 1 disc drive, the other one was not turned on in the bios. Works like a champ now and is compatible with my Panasonic player (I did have to change the firmware to allow me to change the bookmark to ROM).
Thanks for all the help!
