Ok, we bought the ps2 already with a fliptop. I can play regular games just fine. I have swap magic 3.6 for my backups. When I put swap magic in, it makes loud clicking and grinding noises and sometimes the disk wont play. Other times it works just fine (including some of those noises). I have no idea what model it is or how to find it. Like i said, we bought it this way.. hehe
I am wondering if I need a new laser?? I used a laser cleaner (the disk thingy).... so I am stuck!!???
Any help would be greatly appreciated....thanks

If it can play regular games fine. It might be that you just have to burn them at a slower speed.
ps3 with 20gb hard drive
xbox 360 premium edtion with vga/hd hook up to my dell 20.1 inch widescreen lcd.
White and black 1.5 psp's
I'll take this down WHEN micro$oft decides to stop being lazy and make the capcom fighting games backwards compatible with the 360 dammit!!!

Could be a defective Swap Magic disc. If you have a v.12 PS2, your laser could be shot. The v.12 lasers were notorious for getting fried quickly with or without a mod. Fortunately Sony corrected this for the v.13 and later slims. Try gently applying some pressure to the flip top lid while Swap Magic is trying to load.
23. Q. What version is my PS2?

ok, hate to sound like a bigger idiot.. but we dont have the serial number. it is not the "orignal" black case... it has a green case on it. i have looked at the bottom..and all around and theres not a "sony.. serial number sticker"??
And im sorry, I need to correct myself... apparently it makes the clicking and grinding noises even with "orignal" games.??

Check the PS2 version link I posted. That should tell you what version it is. You can get the serial by going to the PS2 browser menu and clicking version. It sounds like your laser may be done. Try cleaning it with a Q tip and rubbing alcohol.
65. Q. I suspect my laser could be dirty. Should I use a lens cleaner or open my PS2 and clean the lens with a Q-tip and rubbing Alcohol?
A. Avoid the lens cleaners. They have the potential to scratch the lens making matters worse. The best strategy is to open your PS2 and clean the lens with a Q tip and rubbing Alcohol.

its not normal for any clicking noises, right? i rented 5 games.. i got all but 1 to decrypt.... and only 2 that i could actually play. I burned them the same way.. dvd decrpyter.. iso read.. iso write. I tried at 1x,2x,4x, 8x and at 16x. but i think im using crappy discs.. fuji??? i have a dual layer burner..not sure if that makes a difference?? So, i am at a total loss. i need to return them in like 2 hours.. AHH... i downloaded them to my cpu hdd... both the mds and iso.. (all but 1... midnight 3 dub edition) so i can keep trying.
pretty much what i am getting at is... i think i am burning them right, and since the ps2 makes these noises and intermittenly plays the swap magic... i am leaning towards the problem as the laser.. so i will try to clean it with a q tip and alcohol...do you think the laser needs to be adjusted? (i know.. you probably dont have a crystal ball... but someone has to know, cause i havent a clue??)
thank you thank you

Hmm.. I was thinking the fliptop lid might not be fitted correctly.. either that or yes it is indeed the laser.. but my first guess would be that the fliptop lid is not corretly on, or the laser may need to be adjusted.
Try adjusting the laser by going to the guide that Tokijin posted, - http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars
One that I find very effective, and have used myself several times.

I got similar noises before I re-aligned my laser, so It could well be.
