I was on supermediastore.com to purchase some taiyo yuden dvd-r's. I am not sure WHICH ones I am suppose to get. Do I get the Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD-R Media Silver Thermal Lacquer 100 Pack in Cake Box Spindle (Two 50-Pack) or the 16x silver inkjet printable or 4x silver shiny in tape wrap, etc?? I have been reading that this is the best of the best so I want to make sure I get the right kind. I currently use a NEC 2500A dvd burner if that is of any help. Thanks in advance for any info!!

Get the 4x ones - that's the best deal right now. Since your burner's max speed is 8x I would not recommend burning max speed - 4x is recommended anyhow - so go w/ the 4x ones.
I would only get the silver inkjet ones if you have a printer that will print to disc. They're a little more pricey so if your not going to print on them go with the 4x.

So you suggest the Taiyo Yuden 4X DVD-R Media Shiny Silver in Tape Wrap for 19.99 after the rebate?

Yes - that's the best deal going right now for Taiyo Yuden. Why pay a little more if your not going to print or burn at the higher speed.
20 cents a disc for ty's is definitely a good buy!

i fully support what the sweet binkie has suggested, it's more cost efficient considering the burner you will be using~ :)
make sure your firmware is up to date to ensure the best writing strategies on those Taiyo Yudens...$0.20/disc for Taiyo Yuden is an unbelievable price to the public~ even if it IS a rebate~

I have a Benq 1640.
What Taiyo Yuden single layer dvd u can refer me to buy? Would the 4x media be burned at higher speed, say 8 ro 10 x. My Benq 1640 can burn verbatim 2.4x dvd+r DL at 8x speed.
Does any one know those TY dvd from supermediastore.com were manufactured by MCC or CMC? I heard CMC is not as good.
I bought 4 packs 16x 50 dvd+r for $9 at OM. It is manufactured MCC. Is it as good as TY? I would rahter buy the best to keep my data.

you seriously need to READ what i've already told you, you gotta get a few FACTS straight as you are only confusing YOURSELF further...
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2/284011
i explained it to you there already regarding TYs and MCC and CMC MAG...
all 3 mentioned there are MANUFACTURERS...
1. Taiyo Yuden is a MANUFACTURER...they produce their OWN MEDIA, they are not going to use MCC (Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp.) or CMC MAG (CMC Magnetics Corp) to make their media
2. MCC is a MANUFACTURER as well, Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp. makes media for VERBATIM (which is a BRAND/LABEL) not a manufacturer
3. CMC MAG is a MANUFACTURER too, CMC Magnetics produces a LOT of media for VARIOUS brands, Verbatim included...
Quote: Does any one know those TY dvd from supermediastore.com were manufactured by MCC or CMC? I heard CMC is not as good.
there you go again, Taiyo Yuden is a MANUFACTURER..so they do NOT use MCC or CMC to produce their discs...the TY discs from supermediastore.com are GENUINE Taiyo Yudens, manufactured by Taiyo Yuden...made in Japan...
yes, you heard CMC is not as good, you are CORRECT there...but, in terms of finding the MCC coding on MOST of the Verbatim label...your chances are pretty high...there have only been reports of CMC MAG under the Verbatim label in a few instances with the 8x rated speed...and i said in the thread i linked you to, CMC MAG was found namely in the "pearl whites" and a few odd packs from sam's club in the U.S.~ :0
just get all your information TOGETHER and process it...i have laid it ALL out for you...get out of the habit of assuming you know the difference between MANUFACTURERS of media and COMPANIES that sell media under their various names/labels.

Listen to DocTY - any advice he gives you is right on the money!!!
As for burning over the rated speed - don't know if the 4x ty's do - but I would advise against it. I will only burn at the rated speed and never at the burners max speed. Even with quality media you could still have problems. Burning the dl's at almost 4x the rated speed - won't do it either - they could turn out to be pretty expensive coasters. Plus what's the hurry? I rather take the extra minutes reducing any chances of errors.

How do I go about getting the correct firmware for my dvd burner. It appears that everything has been working just fine without any type of updates. What would be the benefit of doing that if everything is working ok now? Also, if I do the update, and things do not work, would I be able to go back to what I had before? Thanks!

Firmware 'teaches' your drive media and burn speeds. It helps it recognize the new media and know what to do. I have never had a problem with a firmware update - not saying it can't happen - but you should be fine.
As for flashing it back you should be okay there also - but docTy can advise you better about that.
What firmware does you NEC currently have?

Binkie,
If there is an error at max speed. The writing will fail right? So far, I have burned 40 dvd DL. They are all well. The box lable says the max speed up to 6x.

actually, the info. you provided is the driver info, not the firmware revision~ :)
if you have a copy of dvdinfopro, or dvdidentifier (the same programs that give you the MID coding on dvd discs), they both list your "firmware revisions" too~ :)
you can find your most recent firmware here for your NEC 2500A :
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1740
the newest one for your drive, is the 1.0A, i don't know what this firmware improves upon as i don't own this model drive you have, but, it's always a good idea to keep up to date with firmware...
if you said you have never updated firmware since you purchased your drive, i can only ASSUME that you have revision 1.06, the latest from NEC website happens to be the 1.0A which is listed in the link i gave you above too~
here is some detailed instructions you should read and become familiar with before the "flashing" occurs...
http://support.necsam.com/optical/downloads/flashfirmware/readme....
let me know if you need more assistance, i am more than willing to walk you through it... good luck

Yes the writing can fail at max speed. Writing at max speed increases your chances of problems whether it's the writing failing, playback problems or incompatability problems. For your drive I would recommend writing no faster than 4x. Since newer media is being introduced all the time I would definitely recommend updating your firmware.
