Could someone explain WHY I'd want to use these formats? I mean, whats the point?

I have been burning DVDs, cloning dvds ect, for some time now, and recently downloaded a torrent which turned out to be a VCD. I had never heard of them, and did some reading up on the format... But I never really learned WHY? Is it just because CD's are cheaper? DVD's aren't THAT expensive, are they?

Any insight would be welcome. Just wondering what I'm missing....

people burnt onto CD well before DVDs and DVD Burners were introduced, some people still burn on CD cos they don't have DVD Burner, maybe financial issues or they just don't know about it, whatever the reason, VCDs have been going on longer than DVDs that's it. Your question is SIMILIAR to something along the lines of:
Why do people still use Xbox when they can go and get the Xbox360 instead? See where I'm going with this.

"Not True at All"

These Formats Have Been arround Longer than there have Been DVD Burners so before DVD Burners Came allong the Only Option for Backing up DVD"s was VCD and SVCD, Pluss Most all DVD Players Specificly Support these Formats.....

Pluss the VCD Format is allmost exactly the Same as the SIF/CIF DVD Standard so if you Come across a VCD File you can Author it to DVD without haveing to convert it to another Format so VCD"s are essentially a DVD Format... And SVCD"s Can also Be Burned to DVD without re-encodeing and will Play on Most DVD Players if useing the Right Software....

These Formats are Now Obsolete because DVD Burners are so Cheap and DVD media is So Cheap But 3-4 Years ago they were the Only Option for Backing up DVD"s or watching your Own Movies in your DVD Player...
