this is done by your operating system for example if you have a floppy drive that becomes drive A your Hard Drive becomes C if you have asecond HD that becomes drive D cd rom becomes E some computers have a second partition on the hard drive which is FAT 32 the computer then classifies that fat 32 as a second drive which becomes drive D even if you have only one drive this only applies to Windows XP

WOW! i'm not a dummy , but u make me feel like a retard! lol . i did not give enough info to u for info help, allow me to clarify?
my desk top had a mother board BURN-OUT,it will be a while for me to purchase a new one, until then i am dealing with my lap-top. it has a shrink program but no BURNER,so i connected my other DVD-RW drive to my usb port and it apears as (e)drive. (i also have 321STUDIO program installed.). both as i see it requier a D-DRIVE. it is pluged in but comes up as (E) Drive. is there a way that i can reassign it as the primary(D) drive so that i can BACK UP my movies?
better info? lol , be gental with ur reply? lol

If you are running XP then right click on My Computer and then go into the Manage tab, Storage and Disk Management. In the bottom portion where it says Disk 0 or Disk 1 right click and from there reassign your drive letters.

Okay try it this way, and this is if you are running XP. Make sure your drive is hooked up. Open your Control Panel and then open your Adminstrative Services

From there choose Computer Management and open this

Then on the next screen choose Disk Management.

Right click in the box for the drive and a sidebar will come put and from there you can choose assign drive letters. You can then assign the letter to the drive that you want.

lol lol , u r silly. only if u have knowlage that can assist me in learning more of my lap-tops' ability?his instructions were able but i still have a problem.........and until its rectified all tops stay on. :), :)- lol lol , can u help me? allow me to recap all.
i have a (toshiba) lap-op in lieu of my DESK-TOP which has just had a MOTHER BOARD melt down. untill i can send it in for repair, i am attempting to utilize the copacity of my lap-top. it has 87.5gb copacity. free space is 35gb due to loaded programs.
i have the old (and tried and true )version of DVDSHRINK as well as 321STUDIO dvd capture program. ARNIEBAER'S walk about was EXTREMLY helpful. it worked! BUT! try as i might,i cannot get either program to acknowlage the existanc of a movie disc in the drive.
could that be to lack of free space? i have gone into ADD-REMOVE and deleted superfulous programs to free up more space.
do u have any ideas?

Hi again, okay you have a DVD-RW drive that is a USB, is this correct? Usually with a USB all you have to do is plug it in. Is your computer recognizing the drive at all? As for the amount of space it should be sufficient to do your backups. Have you tried uninstalling Shrink and reinstalling it, this might enable it to pick up your drive. As far as Xcopy goes that is old and flaky you would be better to use newer program, I have this program and have not used the old 321 in ages.

LOL, I was just pulling yer leg. Glad you got a sense of humor.

What operating system do you have on the laptop? Is it XP. Did you get the drive letter reassigned like you wanted to?

What is the DVD burner model that you have and what firmware version does it have? Post the model and we can check for firmware updates and give instructions on how to install it if needed.

Do you have DVDdecrypter? Get it from http://mrbass.org/dvdrip/

cheers.
