This isn't necessarily about modding but I figured it's the most appropriate place for this. Sorry if I'm mistaken.
I did a search and haven't been able to find anything. I need to know if there is a standard factory-setting position for the laser angle adjustment gear. I've done played with it too much and its actin jacked up, locking itself into endless loads and black screen just spinning the disc on a game I know to have worked on this PS2 not but a few days ago. At this point I can't even remember why I opened it in the first place. I think it was to clean the lens because it was actin a lil weird as it is and I thought the angle would fix it.
After playing with it for an entire day, trying all sorts of positions and cleaning it out, I get it to work kinda. For any of you familiar with Guitar Hero, a sweet game anyway, whenever I try to go through the menu and select a song to play, it plays a demo in the background. Well, if I happen to land on a song that won't load, the PS2 won't load anything else either. Like it's trying to load this one preview for this song for all eternity. Trying to go and play it doesn't help either. It just sits at a black screen.
I'm thinkin this guy is just too old and is dying. Gonna need to just buy another used one that's in better condition. Anyway, thanks for any help on this matter.
I used it myself when my laser was dirty and needed to be re-aligned.
I turned the cogwheel unter the laser dropped all the way to the bottom (you know when it has done this, it is a big click and you feel it dropping) then turned the cogwheel a little bit at a time, out a disc in, and checked to see if it would load. This is how I got it up.
From it being so old and stuff just getting loose, I guess the cd would move around the wrong way and it ended up getting some nice scratches in it. Thankfully I was able to get just about all of that cleaned up with an old disc doctor that I had laying around. Trouble is, I think that what caused the scratches was the laser lens pressing up against the moving cd (ouch..). I'm thinkin that, if anything, THAT alone just ruined the lens from reading properly. I could be wrong and hopefully it's more durable than I think. I'll give it another try this weekend when I don't have classes. Thanks for the link, I couldn't find that particular article.
ripture, et. al. Have you solved the Guitar Hero blank screen problem? I've experienced a similar issue. The game loads well enough, and I can scroll through various modes, but once I choose either quick play or career mode and then attemptto choose a song to play, the screen blanks out. What's also odd is that I sometimes can hear the 'basement crowd' in the background (the sounds you hear when the graphics present the band at the opening), but the screen is still blank.
solutions gladly accepted. this is a new game, being played on an older ps2 ('fat' version).

What you describe sounds like what I've been trying to fix. The screen goes blank after you choose a song but you might hear some crowd sounds in the background? Yeah, the ps2 isn't wanting to load any further in the song. You can let it sit for a long time and maybe it will eventually load. I did finally get it to work about 70-80% of the time.
If you've ever taken apart the PS2 ( I have the "fat" one too ), then you'll be better suited to do this. If you haven't, it's not that difficult, read the article Mik3h posted to do that. What I did was I went in and set the laser angle cog to the lowest position and tested the ps2. Every time it wouldn't work, I'd raise the angle 2 notches up and try again. Eventually the game would load but not do so good, then another adjustment got it to load and work like 70-80% of complete order. I decided not to touch it now that it was atleast mostly working, but another adjustment or two and I'd probly be in business.
My reccomendation to you is to try that, and GENTLY clean off the laser lens while you're in there. That oughta solve your problem. If it doesn't definatly fix it, you MAY have to feed more power to the lens using these other two screws. I don't know anything about that though, didn't go that far, but that is another place to try something.
