Hi everyone. I hope I am posting in the right Forum. I have been burning DVS for a little while and every now and then have a problem - but not often. I have read a little about upgrading the Firmware for my DVD Burners. I have two Burners. My questions: Firstly, how do I go about finding out exactly what Brand, Model, etc., my burners are so that I know what to upgrade. Secondly, what website do I go to to upgrade Firmware. Thirdly, is it an irreversible process and can I do any damage to my Drives. I was under the impression that I should always be running with the most up to date Firmware but am just a little apprehensive. Thanks for the help.

OK, on your taskbar, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, then System Information. In System Information, you'll see a Components tab. Click the + on that. You should see a bunch of stuff including CD-ROM. Highlight that. It will let you know what type of DVD burner you have. Once you find out what type of burner you have, you can go to the link below and search for your burner's latest firmware:

I took these relevant parts from my ps2 dvd burning guide for you..

Answers

1. I recommend that you have AT MINIMUM a computer with a 1Ghz processor, 512MB Ram and a 4x dvd writer for making your backups.

2. I recommend that you use Taiyo yuden, verbatim or maxell(made in Japan) as most people have success with those discs. You could also use Ritek G04 or G05 dye discs, some people (me included) have great success with these, but until you know whether your dvd writer and PS2 like those type I suggest only buying a small(sample) pack to try them.
DO NOT USE INFERIOR DISCS FROM MANUFACTURERS SUCH AS MEMOREX, PRINCO, IMATION OR ANY DISCS WITH A CMC MAG MEDIA CODE?. THEY WILL SOMETIMES WORK, BUT CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS LATER

To check what media you have, you can use this program here:-
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...

And check it on this website to see the verdict from reviews:-
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?

3. There's already a guide on how to use DVD Decrypter,Nero and a few other burning programs correctly, so I won't re-iterate..

You can get DVD Decrypter from one of these places:-

http://teammodders.com/download.php?action=file&file_id=1

http://xtreme-source.com/main.php?c_id=download&action=file&file_id=17

http://www.filehippo.com/download_dvd_decrypter/

4. This section covers some things you MAY require to increase ripping/burning performance.

a) Make sure you have DMA enabled on your IDE devices... to do this open up the CONTROL PANEL.

Then select and open the SYSTEM FOLDER.

Then select the HARDWARE TAB.

Then select the DEVICE MANAGER BUTTON.

Then expand the tree + for the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

Right mouse click the PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL, a mouse menu will come up, select PROPERTIES.

This will pop-up.

Then select the ADVANCED TAB.

You can now see if DMA is enabled on that IDE channel, if it is in PIO mode, change it using the drop down menu.. then hit OK.
Do the same with the SECONDARY IDE CHANNEL and then you should be set to go.

b) Installing WNASPI32.DLL. Get it from here:-
Nero.com/en/WNASPI32.DLL.html" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.Nero.com/en/WNASPI32.DLL.html

Go to the folder where you downloaded the file WNASPI32.DLL to.

Go to EDIT and COPY TO FOLDER.

Expand C:\.

Expand WINDOWS.

Select SYSTEM32 folder, and then press the COPY BUTTON.

If you go into your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder, you should now be able to see this.

Now to enable WNASPI32.DLL to be used with DVD Decrypter. Open up DVD Decrypter and go to TOOLS menu and select SETTINGS.

Select the I/O TAB.

Select the radio button for ASPI ? WNASPI32.DLL and then press OK.

Now it should all be done.

c) Updating firmware. This is relatively easy in most cases, if you don?t know the make, model and firmware of your CD/DVD - ROM/WRITER then you can use this program to check (it automatically starts the download progress):- Firmware version detection tool (52.39KB, 5431 downloads)

Start the program and you should see something like this.

Then go to here:- http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php

And use the search downloads function to find the firmware for your drive.

For example. I use my own drive NEC ND3520 and enter it into the search bar.

The results for your drive come up like this:-

And you select the latest firmware for your drive.. in my case it?s 3.06. Click on the latest firmware for your drive and it?ll start a download dialogue box like this:-

Select save and tell it where you want to save it in Internet Explorer, or with FireFox it?ll save it to your default download location. On completion of download.. navigate to your download folder.

Most of the time it will have downloaded a RAR file, so now you need to extract the files from this RAR file. OPEN/RUN the rar file.. it will open a window like this.

Hit the EXTRACT BUTTON. And choose a location to extract the files to like this.

Then navigate to the folder that you just extracted the files to.

Locate the README.TXT file? IMPORTANT!!! READ THE DIRECTIONS IN THAT FILE CAREFULLY AND IN FULL!!!

When you?ve read the file and followed the directions for flashing your firmware, you?re ready to begin. Open/run the flash utility. If you happened to download something other than a flash utility, I?m sorry but I don?t know how to update firmware that way. Either discontinue using the guide or follow the instructions in the README file.

It should look something like this.

As you can see from the picture, my drive does not need flashing as it is already that version. But you should press the FLASH BUTTON, and follow any instruction given to you on screen? when it?s finished flashing the drive it should prompt you to restart the computer to complete the flash? when it restarts it will detect it as a new drive, wait for it to finish installing the new drive and then you?ll probably be prompted to restart the computer again to complete the install? do that and then you?re finished.

I hope this guide was some help to you :D

Thanks so much paddymail. I looked at your guide and thought 'Oh my gosh' but I have printed it out and have read it and its not as overwhelming as I first thought. I am going to work through the process slowly when everyone is out and I will let you know the end result. Thank you. I would have never been able to do this on my own.

No problems.. it's not that hard to follow I think.. I purposefully made it a step by step guide with pics so there should be less confusion about what you should do next.
Good luck with it... don't forget to read the disclaimer on the firmware update page ok... and all the information about how the burner should be connected to the computer etc in the "readme.txt" file after you've downloaded the firmware.
If you have any problems.. get back to me and I'll try and help you out as much as I can :)

I have checked what sort of drives I have and what version of firmware I am running but am having a little difficulty knowing which download to use. For your info I have two DVD Drives. They are: Pioneer DVR-108 - using Firmware Version 104 & Pioneer DVR-106D using Firmware Version 107. I have been to the website but am not 100% clear on what to download and also how will the program know which drive I am downloading for.

For you VDR106D the newest is 1.08

And for the other is 1.20 I think.

You have to do the drives one at a time... follow the instructions in the readme file and you'll be fine. I'm pretty sure you can't flash a drive with the firmware for another drive.. it check it beforehand in most cases anyway.. like in my picture near the botton where it says current version 1.06 and update version... it also tells you what drive you have selected with the one I used see?

Ok, well good luck with it
