I recently did Scans on my three brands of Discs Maxell, Sony, and Memorex anyway I started with my Maxell DVD-R Media ID RITEKG05 and It scored at around 97% then I tried My Memorex DVD-R Media ID CMC.AM3 expecting to get a real bad Quality and it scored at around 84% so then I scanned my Sony DVD-R Media ID SONY08D1 and what I saw was a Quality score of around 71% Which I thought was wrong so I scanned another Sony Disc and it was a lower score of Quality, So what is going on does anyone know. I have never realy liked the Sony Brand because I always seem to get bad results with there Products and thought I would trust them again with DVD Media and I get this well I think I am done purchasing their Products Exept for Playstation 3. Taiyo Yuden is the way to go I would Say.

Your burner must not "like" the Sony discs. Check the web page and see if they are listed as compatable/recommended for your brand of burner.

After having used more that a half-dozen different burners along with nearly every brand/manufacturer of disc, I have concluded that some burners just plain don't like some discs ...
For example .. I have had a Ricoh MP5240a drive for eons and it just can't get along with Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim media for some reason it seems to prefer media with the darker dyes .. it just plain tears Ricohjpn and Ritek media up with awesome results
Now my BenQ DW1640 ... It simply adores Taiyo Yuden abd Verbatim, consistantly scoring in the high 90's in the quality scores .. in fact, I can't remember the last time it went as low as 96 ... however, Ricohjpn, at any speed, just doesn't give me the results that my picky azz demands ...

It could possibly be my Burner but dont you think that if it was the burner it would fail during the burning proccess too. My current burner is the Pioneer DVR-108 is that not a new enough burner that it would reqognize newer Media brands and formats and such. I use to burn onto the Memorex discs made by CMC Magnetics and had more failing burns then with the Sony so why would the quality score go higher on the Memorex then with Sony and would the Sony not be more compatible with my Drive then Memosux seeing as they fail less often. I have an older Memorex DVD backup that is on a Memorex disk I am going to scan it today and see if the Quality is low like the Sony because it is close to a year old now.

What is the speed rating on the discs that you are using? Without a firmware update, your drive may just be experiencing problems with some of the media ...
I had a 108 Pioneer that I retired a while ago because it was not burning up to my picky-azz standards ...

Is your firmware currently up to date? That drive is actually also an Asus1604-P which I have as one of my burners and it loves Sony Media + or -. It also reads them this way: Sony DVD+R at 12x and Sony DVD-R 8x at 16x. The Sony media gave results always in the upper 90's.
My other Burner is a BenQ1640 and it loves ANYTHING and has given me constant quality scan results from 97-100 using TY media.

The BenQ DW1640, dollar for dollar, burn for burn, scan for scan, is the best burner produced anywhere for any price so far ...
... and if you don't agree, it's simply because you've never used one ...

Sounds to me like your drive is an OEM model that isn't supported by Pioneer ...

Intel's application accelerator might be the problem. It really isn't necessary and if removed you can restore your Drives back to DMA mode which should allow them to be seen.

The Device Manager will list it as a Pioneer drive for borh OEM or retail models ... My Pioneer 108 is an OEM drive and I've had lots of trouble updating the firmware ... I talked to Pioneer about it and they told me that they do not support the OEM drives whatsoever ... I was told that if I bought the drive with a PC, that the PC manufacturer would provide firmware updates ... but since I purchased my drive as an OEM unit at a computer show that, basically, I was SOL ... so I quit using the POS and will NEVER, EVER, BUY A TRASH PIONEER DRIVE AGAIN

On the website they diferentiate DVR-A08 as a retail version of the OEM DVR-108. There are separate firmware downloads provided for each of these even though the file size is identical.

If your PC had the Intel Application Accelerator installed, you secondary channel under device manager would look like this:
So that cannot be an issue as you state you have DMA4 showing.
DVR-108, DVR-108BK
R108_FW120EU.EXE

There are two primary channels and one secondary channel. The SATA HD is on one of the primaries and the two optical drives are on the other primary (burner as master and ROM as slave).

It's the same difference and again, it's definitely not Intel's Application Accelerator. If you have DMA you would also have an advanced tab which, as the picture I posted shows, it does not.
I would try again to do a firmware upgrade and see what happens.

Both optical drives show DMA enabled - DMA mode 4 - showing on the second of the two primary IDE controllers.

Well I can also say that my Asus 1604-P only has the 1.18 firmware as well and it is fine with Sony as I stated above. Asus doesn't even have any other newer firmware for my burner.

The Sony site hasn't updated since 1.10 but at least flash file from their site did work.
