Dear All,
I am happy to annonce that we have
just finished a huge 5.1 surround sound
compression research project.
Software tools for encoding movies
with full 5.1 surround (special edition of Virtual Dub Mod),
and
for real time decoding
(DirectShow filter)
are available now.
The decoder is compatible with for example BSplayer,
and other DirectShow based players.
You can use VirtualDubMod_Aud-X_enabled
(available @ www.aud-x.com for free)
to create new movies.
www.aud-x.com
THE TECHNOLOGY AND ALL SOFTWARE TOOLS ARE FREE
I hope that you will
find it useful.
All comments are welcome :)
Peace

Just a short info.
We have modified Aud-X DirectShow filter.
So now when you use other filters, such as FFDShow audio
or AC3Filter, there will be no conflict.
The new version is available from www.aud-x.com
Have fun!

This does sound very good for surround, but what about people who want to play it on just stereo? It doesn't sound nearly as nice as it does in surround sound. I've also noticed that the sound cannot play when played again automatically.
Is that just a limitation, the creator's intention, or the decoders fault? Thanks in advanced.

First of all, please download the newest version (1.2)
http://www.aud-x.com/content/view/12/26/
There are several options available, which vary in terms of bitrate and
mp3 backwards compatiblity
1) If you use PC for playing the 5.1 sounds, use STDQ (128 kbps)
2) If you would like to also use other mp3 players hardware, DivX compatible DVD, etc. please use HGHQ (192 kbps)
---
To play it with 5.1 sound, you need our decoder, which is a DirectShow filter. Therefore DS compatible players must be used to decode the sound (also to obtain stereo from STDQ. For HGHQ, to obtain stereo you do not need our decoder, because it is stereo backwards compatible).
However, in case of DVD players connected to Home Theatre amps,
the HGHQ stereo basic stream is also a DolbyProLogicII compatible downmix. Therefore it will be decoded by your amp (if you select so) to surround sound. Important to note: The DPLII surround is rather a substitute of a digital surround, but still better than stereo ;)

Well, I did most of that, but that's not exactly what I meant. I'm on a laptop, which I'm pretty sure doesn't have 5.1, and downsampling it to 2.0 using the DS filter from your site didn't really sound downsampled. It just sounds like some parts of the audio are missing when played at 2.0, but I'm not too sure if that's not how it's supposed to sound. I was using the sample you supplied and the newer version, if that helps any.
Okay, nevermind, I got my answer from the link you provided. It just makes it sound like mono because that's how the provided bitrate puts it as when playing it in stereo.

Hmm, If you are using our DS filter,
than the STDQ (which is mono when used without our decoder) should be
a high quality stereo. Simply because it is first decoded to 6 channels,
and then downmixed to a regular stereo (to DPLII dowmnimx to be more precise). Please make sure that Aud-X DS filter is activated when playing (check for Aud-X icon in the tray). Also, please select the stereo output.

Everytime I use the DS filter, it always messes up the audio to some extent, whether it's skipping through the file or having it replay after playing through. Using the default MP3 decoder just plays it in 2.0 and allows it to replay again.

Skipping is very strange. Maybe your CPU is not sufficient...I do not know. This is very unusual.
Anyhow, the Aud-X/MP3 stream compatibility must be switched on
to obtain a stereo.

BTW. please try to switch off all the video postprocessing.
Especially, I recommend to use FFDshow video decoder, where
you have a wide variety of decoding options to manipulate with.
Thanks for interest in Aud-X.
